Car battery deposit 2026 — €7.50 refunded, here's how
Anyone buying a new starter battery is confronted at the checkout with an item that is surprising at first glance: 7.50 euros deposit. Why is that? You are not paying a hidden fee, but making a legally anchored contribution to environmental protection. The battery deposit has been a fixed part of every purchase of a vehicle starter battery since the Battery Law Implementation Act (BattDG) came into force. Anyone who returns an old battery gets the 7.50 euros refunded – or saves it directly on a new purchase. In this guide, we show you the simplest way to save the deposit, correctly handle the return of your old 12 V battery and which special rules apply in 2026. At Electronicx, we know all the questions surrounding the car battery deposit from daily customer conversations and give you reliable answers.
The widely used deposit amount of 7.50 euros is not an arbitrarily chosen figure. It does not cover the cost of environmentally responsible disposal and recycling of the valuable raw materials, but serves as a steering instrument. This is because a starter battery contains lead, sulphuric acid and plastics that can cause massive damage to soil and groundwater if disposed of improperly. By returning an old battery, you help to recycle over 90% of the materials. We show you how to use the statutory deposit scheme to your advantage and get the amount refunded – whether at a specialist retailer, in a workshop or directly with your order in the Electronicx online shop.

What is the car battery deposit?
The deposit on starter batteries is a statutory deposit obligation under § 19 of the Battery Law Implementation Act (BattDG). Accordingly, every retailer that sells vehicle batteries must charge its customers a deposit of 7.50 euros including VAT – unless the customer returns a used old battery of the same type. The deposit obligation applies regardless of whether you buy a 45 Ah or 110 Ah battery, an AGM, AGM car battery or a conventional wet battery. As soon as the battery is classified as a "vehicle starter battery", the deposit applies.
The amount of 7.50 euros has been stable for years and has not been increased due to inflation. For you as a buyer this means: keep the receipt or invoice on which the deposit must be shown. Only with this proof will you be refunded the money when you later return an old battery. No receipt, no deposit refund. And: under the BattDG there is no deposit on drive batteries for electric cars or on industrial batteries; separate take-back systems apply to these.
In everyday language you also hear the terms “old battery deposit” or “battery deposit”. They always mean the same sum on vehicle starter batteries. The law is intended to prevent old car batteries from ending up in household waste or in the environment. Every year, millions of old batteries are returned in this way and the valuable raw materials lead and sulphuric acid are fed into a closed loop.
How the 2026 deposit system works – step by step
The process is simplicity itself and standardised. Whether you order your battery from the shop around the corner or online from us – the mechanism is identical. Below is the complete practical guide on how to save or get back the deposit:
Step 1: Check the old battery before buying
Before you buy a new car battery, take a look at the old one. Is it a lead-acid battery (12 V)? Is it still in the vehicle or have you already removed it? Pay attention to the type designation: starter batteries with 12 V, nominal capacities of approx. 36 Ah to 110 Ah and a cold cranking current (CCA) of typically 300 A to 850 A are subject to the deposit. AGM and EFB batteries are also covered. Only pure drive batteries (e.g. for e-scooters, e-bikes, forklifts or LiFePO₄ on-board batteries) are exempt from the deposit.
Step 2: Make the new purchase with return of the old battery
If you hand in your old battery immediately at the time of purchase, you do not pay the deposit in the first place. The 7.50 euros are either shown on the invoice and credited immediately, or the deposit is dropped entirely. At Electronicx you can hand in your old battery in Cleebronn after a brief arrangement; the parcel service does not take old batteries. Important: the old battery must be complete, the casing must not be broken and it must not leak.
Step 3: Pay the deposit and have it refunded later
Don't have the old battery with you? Then you pay the 7.50 euro deposit at the time of purchase. The invoice shows a separate item such as: “Deposit starter battery acc. § 19 BattDG: €7.50”. You get the deposit back when you hand in the old battery in person to the seller. If you hand it in somewhere else (recycling centre, workshop, dealer), have the return confirmed; an online retailer refunds the deposit against this proof if it is no more than two weeks old when presented. Starter batteries may not be sent by post as hazardous goods.
Deposit amount €7.50: no exceptions, clear rules
The deposit amount of exactly 7.50 euros per battery applies as a flat rate and regardless of the purchase price, the capacity or the technology. A small 44 Ah starter battery for a small car (price approx. 45–70 euros) triggers the same deposit as a powerful 100 Ah AGM battery with 800 A CCA (price 150–250 euros). There is no scaling by weight or output. Nor any increase in 2026. The same deposit amount also applies to motorcycle starter batteries, provided they are classified as vehicle starter batteries (so not, for example, pure AGM deep-cycle batteries without a cold cranking rating).
When buying a battery package, e.g. two starter batteries (because a vehicle has two banks), the deposit is charged for each individual battery – i.e. 15.00 euros for two batteries. This too must be transparent on the invoice.
| Battery type | Deposit under BattDG | Example capacities | Return route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional wet starter battery (Pb) | 7,50 € | 36 Ah – 110 Ah, 12 V | At the dealer / collection point |
| AGM starter battery | 7,50 € | 60 Ah – 105 Ah, 12 V | At the dealer / collection point |
| EFB starter battery | 7,50 € | 60 Ah – 80 Ah, 12 V | At the dealer / collection point |
| Motorcycle starter battery (lead-acid) | 7,50 € | 6 Ah – 18 Ah, 12 V | At the dealer / collection point |
| LiFePO₄ on-board battery / leisure battery | no deposit | 50 Ah – 200 Ah, 12 V | Not eligible for deposit; separate take-back via the manufacturer as usual |
| Drive battery (e.g. electric car, forklift) | no deposit | Individual, high voltage | Manufacturer take-back system |

Car battery deposit when buying online and shipping – how Electronicx does it
If you order your new starter battery online, the same deposit regulations apply. However, many people ask: how do I return the old battery if I receive the new one by parcel? At Electronicx GmbH, the process is clear and convenient:
- During the order process, you specify whether you wish to return an old battery. The system provisionally shows the deposit amount of 7.50 euros.
- Delivery is usually made with a logistics partner who takes the old battery with them when the new battery is delivered – provided this was agreed in advance. You only need to have the old battery ready (removed, clean, but not opened).
- If the old battery is taken away, the deposit amount is omitted from your final invoice. No advance payment, no subsequent refund.
- If you order without old battery return, you pay the 7.50 euros. Within 12 months, you can send us your old battery (free delivery possible, exact conditions on request). After inspection and identification, we transfer the deposit back to you – always upon presentation of the invoice number.

Old battery return: reclaiming the deposit – even afterwards
You have already bought your new battery and paid the deposit, but the old one was still installed in the vehicle? No problem – the law grants you a generous deadline for return. Within 12 months of purchase, you can hand in an old battery at any retailer that sells starter batteries and demand payment of the 7.50 euros. You are not tied to the retailer where you bought the new battery. This is an important consumer protection.
Requirements:
- The old battery must be a vehicle starter battery (lead-acid, AGM, EFB).
- You must be able to present a receipt or an invoice on which the deposit is shown separately. A self-issued receipt is not sufficient.
- The battery must be in a condition that allows safe handling (no open casing, no leaking acid).
If the corresponding receipt is missing, the retailer may refuse payment – they are then only obliged to take back the old battery free of charge, but not to refund the deposit. Therefore: keep your invoice safe!
The German government introduced this regulation to achieve the highest possible return rate. This means you can even return old batteries that came from a previous owner, upon presentation of your own deposit receipt. Important: you do not have to prove that this exact old battery was originally bought with this invoice – it is only about the deposit proof itself.
If you wish to hand in the old battery with us in Cleebronn, please discuss this briefly with our customer service in advance. Starter batteries may not be sent back by post as hazardous goods. The refund of a paid deposit is made to your account after handover.
Frequently asked questions about the car battery deposit (FAQ)
How much is the deposit on a car battery in 2026?
As in previous years, the deposit remains unchanged at 7.50 euros including VAT. It applies to every vehicle starter battery, regardless of capacity, technology or purchase price.
Can I get the deposit back without a purchase receipt?
No. The deposit refund is tied to the presentation of a receipt or an invoice on which the deposit is shown. Without this receipt, the retailer may refuse payment.
Can I return an old battery without buying a new one and get the deposit?
No, a claim to a deposit refund only exists if you have previously bought a new battery and paid the deposit. However, the return of an old battery itself is free of charge for consumers.
Is a deposit charged on lithium-ion on-board batteries (LiFePO₄)?
No. The Battery Act distinguishes between starter batteries and industrial/traction batteries. A pure supply battery (e.g. 12 V LiFePO₄ with 100 Ah) does not trigger a deposit. Such batteries do not fall under § 19 BattDG.
What happens if I do not return the old battery?
You keep the old battery, but you do not get the deposit refunded. The 7.50 euros remain with the retailer. This is not illegal, but you lose the right to a refund. At some point, however, the old battery must be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.
Do I have to return the old battery to the same retailer where I bought it?
No. You can go to any retailer that sells starter batteries with your receipt and request the deposit refund. The retailer is obliged to pay it out.
Why is no deposit shown on my invoice even though I did not return an old battery?
In that case it is probably a battery that is not subject to the deposit, or the retailer has made a mistake. Contact the seller. If you wish, you can also request a retrospective deposit settlement.
Does the deposit also apply to motorcycle batteries?
Yes, provided it is a starter battery for a motorcycle (12 V lead-acid). Here too the deposit is €7.50. Look at the type designation: if it says CCA (cold cranking amps), it is a starter battery and therefore subject to the deposit.
Conclusion: use the deposit wisely – save money and protect the environment
The car battery deposit is a well-designed steering levy that benefits every vehicle owner who handles old batteries responsibly. If you want to save the €7.50, simply hand in your old starter battery when buying a new one. That is the most elegant way. But even if you cannot do that straight away, the 12-month return period means there is no rush. With the right knowledge and a well-kept receipt, you will get your money back safely. Just make sure it really is a starter battery and not a pure supply battery, for which no deposit is charged.
If you would like to order your next car battery online, you benefit from a transparent deposit process at Electronicx GmbH.
