Programming TPMS sensors BMW – guide for F30, G20, X5, X3

Your BMW is not displaying tyre pressure? Here is how to relearn TPMS sensors correctly

Modern BMW models from model year 2014 onwards use direct tyre pressure monitoring RDK (RDC) with sensors in each wheel. After a wheel or tyre change, when switching to winter wheels or after replacing faulty sensors, the vehicle must recognise the new transmitters – known as relearning. Without correctly relearned sensors, the RDK warning light stays on permanently, the iDrive screen shows no pressure values or displays the message "Initialise tyre pressure monitoring". In this comprehensive guide you will learn how to reliably relearn TPMS sensors for BMW F30, G20, X3, X5 and many other series – whether via iDrive reset, automatically while driving or with a diagnostic tool.

All information is based on BMW's factory RDK systems. Only use compatible sensors with the correct frequency and high-quality electronics – such as the models available from us – and observe the model-dependent reset routines. Our shop, Electronicx GmbH from Cleebronn, offers suitable TPMS sensors for almost every BMW and is happy to assist you with technical advice if you have any questions.

• Avoid false warnings: Without relearning, the control unit will not register the new sensors – a permanent error message.
• Models with automatic transmission: From model year 2020, BMW often uses self-learning; nevertheless, a reset via iDrive is required.
• Note the frequency: 433 MHz throughout Europe, 315 MHz in North America – an incorrect sensor will be ignored.
• Professional support: If you have any questions, you can reach us on +49 7135 7194106 or [email protected]

BMW models and their TPMS systems: direct or indirect?

Not all BMWs have directly measuring sensors. Some models use an indirect system (RPA) that evaluates differences in wheel speed via ABS sensors. In this case, no sensor is fitted to the valve and physical learning is not required – a pressure control reset in the iDrive menu or via a button is sufficient. The following table shows which series uses which system:

For older vehicles with an indirect system (RPA/Flat Tire Monitor), you do not need wheel sensors. The warning light is reset by pressing the reset button or via the on-board computer. With direct RDK, however, sensors are mandatory, and these must be relearned after every change. Compatible TPMS sensors for BMW with direct RDK can be found in our range.

Requirements: Which sensors and frequencies does your BMW need?

The most important parameter is the radio frequency. In the European Union and most countries outside North America, BMW uses 433 MHz. In the USA, Canada and Mexico, 315 MHz is used. A wrong sensor cannot be interpreted by the control unit, and the learning process will fail. Before purchasing, always check the vehicle data or the marking on the original sensor.

1. Vehicle registration document / registration certificate: Under D.2 you will find the type approval; the correct frequency can be determined via the key number.
2. Look at the old sensor: The frequency is often stamped on the housing (e.g. “433 MHz”).
3. Online query in the HSN/TSN directory: With your vehicle data, we will be happy to help – give us a call.
4. Selection at Electronicx: Our sensors are clearly assigned to frequency ranges and all are equipped with a 3 V lithium cell (approx. 500 mAh); the service life depends on use, temperature and care.

Also note the valve type – usually aluminium or stem valve – and the correct tightening torque of 4 Nm for the sensor screw. After installation, you must initialise the system, otherwise the instrument cluster will continue to show the last stored pressure.

Step by step: Learning TPMS sensors on BMW F30 (3 Series from 2012)

How to reset via iDrive

The F30 (Saloon, Touring, GT) uses direct RDK. Initialisation is done purely via the on-board menu – there is no separate reset button. Prerequisite: ignition on, engine off. Proceed as follows:

1. Press the iDrive controller to access the main menu.
2. Navigate to “Vehicle information” → “Vehicle status” → “Tyre pressure”.
3. There, select “Tyre settings” (or “Initialise”).
4. Confirm the following prompt: “Tyre pressure now set?” with “Yes”.
5. The system prompts you to drive a short distance. Start the engine and drive for 10 to 15 minutes at at least 30 km/h; the control unit automatically detects the new sensor IDs.

After successful adaptation, the current pressure values appear on the display. If the message “RDK inactive” persists, repeat the reset with the vehicle at operating temperature. In rare cases, the sensors must be triggered manually with a TPMS activation tool (ATEQ, Autel, etc.) if, for example, replacement sensors without factory pre-programmed ID have been fitted.

When a diagnostic device is necessary

If you use programmable universal sensors or the control unit does not learn the IDs after several driving cycles, stationary learning via OBD dongle or diagnostic tester can be the solution. The sensor IDs and positions (front/rear axle) are written directly into the RDK module. We recommend this procedure for complex conversions, for example when a vehicle is converted to different wheel/tyre dimensions with different pressure specifications.

Learning procedure for BMW G20 (3 Series from 2019) and current models

With the newer iDrive generation 7.0 (Live Cockpit Professional) and iDrive 8, the menu structure has changed slightly, but the principle remains the same:

1. iDrive home screen -> “Vehicle” (vehicle symbol) → “Vehicle settings”.
2. Select “Tyre pressure” → “Tyre settings”.
3. Then tap “Confirm with drive”. The message “Will reset automatically after a short drive” appears.
4. Now start the engine and drive off – the learning process typically takes 5–10 km.

Some G20 models (in particular M340i, 330e plug-in hybrid) also have the extended RDC function, which automatically detects wheel positions. These systems are even less sensitive to sensor changes and require only this one reset. If no values are available after 15 kilometres despite the correct procedure, check the sensor batteries – a 5-year lithium cell from brand sensors has an average capacity of 500 mAh; after 7–8 years the voltage often drops below the radio threshold. High-quality sensors from Electronicx use robust electronics, so such failures are very rare.

TPMS pairing on BMW X3 (G01) and X5 (G05) – SUV practice

The current X series G01 (X3) and G05 (X5) share the same RDC architecture as the G20. One small special feature: on vehicles with all-wheel drive and air suspension (optional on X5), recalibration of the load condition in the control unit takes slightly longer – simply drive as normal. The steps:

• Open iDrive: Vehicle → Settings → Tyre pressure → Set tyre.
• Note the message: “Initialisation running – values will be displayed after a short drive.”
• Driving mode: City traffic is sufficient; avoid longer stationary periods with the engine switched off during the learning process.

If you use a wheel set with universal sensors that do not yet carry a BMW-coded ID, an activation tool is helpful. However, you can also use the automatic learning mode: after 15 minutes of driving, the control unit independently searches for new 433 MHz signals. Our TPMS sensors for BMW are supplied with an ID from the factory and are recognised by all common BMW RDC control units.

Stationary reset vs. OBD pairing – When do you need which procedure?

The in-vehicle reset function is not always sufficient. The following table compares the three most common methods:

For most users, the manual reset is sufficient. If the vehicle does not automatically recognise the sensors after three driving cycles – which is extremely rare with high-quality sensors such as ours – we will help you further by telephone. Simply send us the sensor ID by email to [email protected], and we will check compatibility free of charge.

Common problems during pairing and their solutions

RDC warning light does not go out after reset

Most common cause: The sensors transmit on 315 MHz instead of 433 MHz (or vice versa). A sensor battery that is too weak can also suppress the signal. Check the frequency code and, if necessary, switch to a fresh sensor.

iDrive shows “RDC inactive” after tyre change

This happens if the reset was not acknowledged or the drive was too short. Repeat the reset and drive briskly for at least 8 kilometres. Vehicles with mixed tyres sometimes require manual entry of the tyre type for correct pressure specification – this is also done in the “Set tyre” menu.

Sensor ID is not recognised despite correct frequency

An activation tool will help here. Alternatively, you can order suitable sensors with factory programming from us, which can be integrated immediately via reset.

Backup battery voltage too low

For sensors older than 6 years, the resting voltage can fall below 2.1 V. Measure with a multimeter. A new sensor from Electronicx solves the problem permanently.
