Boat battery AGM marine 80-140Ah for Bayliner & Bavaria

Q: How do I charge an AGM boat battery correctly?

Use a charger with a special AGM characteristic (end-of-charge voltage 14.6–14.8 V). Modern AGM chargers detect the battery type automatically and adapt the phases (main charge, absorption, float). Avoid old transformer chargers without voltage regulation – they can overcharge the battery and permanently damage it.

Why an AGM battery for your boat?

AGM technology (Absorbent Glass Mat) has become established as a de facto standard in shipping. Unlike wet lead-acid batteries, the electrolyte is bound in a glass-fibre fleece – this brings decisive advantages on the water:

Vibration-resistant: Even in heavy seas or when planing hard, the battery suffers no damage because the plates sit firmly in the fleece.
Leak-proof: No liquid acid, so no leakage even when heeling (inclined up to 90°) or in the event of a cracked casing – ideal for fast inflatable boats and sailing yachts.
Maintenance-free: No topping up with distilled water required; the closed VRLA system (valve-regulated) recombines gases to over 99 %.
Cycle-resistant: Compared with starter batteries, AGM models withstand 500 to 800 charge/discharge cycles at 50 % DoD (Depth of Discharge) depending on the depth of discharge – while remaining powerful and delivering stable voltage.
Low self-discharge: Only about 1–3 % per month – the battery also survives a winter lay-up without damage.
High cold cranking currents: CCA values from 650 to 1200 amperes enable reliable engine starting, even with diesel engines or at low temperatures.

This makes an AGM marine battery equally suitable as a starter and as a service battery. Many boat owners rely on a combination of two AGM batteries – one for engine starting, one for the on-board supply.

The right capacity: 80 Ah, 100 Ah or 140 Ah?

The nominal capacity C20 (20-hour discharge) is only a guide. What matters for the choice is the actual load on board: how much current do a fridge (2–4 A), plotter (1–2 A), radio and lighting draw together over a typical period of use of 8 hours? Added to this is the surge demand of the starter. Here is some practical guidance:

AGM 80 Ah: Ideal for small bowriders, open sports boats and day cruisers used on inland lakes or coastal waters. Typical cold cranking currents around 750 A (EN), reserve capacity (RC) approx. 140 minutes. Suitable for Bayliner 160, 185 or smaller engines up to 4.3 l petrol.
AGM 100 Ah: The most commonly chosen all-round capacity for medium-sized open/semi-enclosed boats. CCA around 850 A, RC approx. 190 min. Ideal for Bayliner 245, Bavaria 33 Sport or motor yachts with overnight anchoring power requirements (cool box, navigation lighting).
AGM 140 Ah: For large cruising yachts, Sea Ray Sundancer 320 or catamarans with extensive on-board electronics (bow thruster, windlass, second fridge). CCA above 1000 A, RC >240 min. It is often installed as a service battery together with a separate starter battery.

For diesel engines with a high compression ratio, we generally recommend a CCA reserve of at least 20 % above the figure required by the engine manufacturer. A look at the on-board manual and measurement of the actual current consumption (Ah per day) help with exact dimensioning.

Technical data and dimensions of the AGM marine batteries

The following table summarises the typical characteristics of our AGM boat batteries in the 80–140 Ah range. All values are based on models commonly used in practice; the dimensions correspond to the standard battery tray format H8 and may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer. The batteries are fitted with M8 threaded terminals (some also with M6 adapters) and are fully VRLA-sealed.

Capacity C20 (Ah)	Cold cranking current CCA (A, to EN)	Dimensions L × W × H (mm)	Weight (kg)	Price range approx. (EUR, incl. VAT)
80 Ah	730 – 780	315 × 175 × 190	22 – 24	120 – 180
100 Ah	820 – 880	353 × 175 × 190	27 – 29	150 – 220
140 Ah	980 – 1060	394 × 175 × 190	35 – 38	200 – 300

Prices vary depending on the manufacturer, the current lead price and seasonal availability. When choosing, in addition to the CCA value, attention should also be paid to cycle endurance at 50 % depth of discharge: high-quality marine AGM batteries achieve 600–800 cycles there, which with a well-designed on-board electrical system means several seasons of operation. All batteries listed by us are certified for use at sea and packed in accordance with ADR/UN 2800.

Installation and connection of the boat battery

Safe installation is decisive for the service life and protection of the entire on-board electrical system. Bear these points in mind:

Battery box: Use an acid-resistant, closable battery tray with adequate ventilation. Even though the AGM releases almost no hydrogen gas in operation, a small ventilation opening to the outside is advisable.
Cable cross-section: For cable lengths up to 3 m, a cross-section of at least 35 mm² (copper) should be chosen for starter circuits; for greater distances or high continuous current (inverter), this must be increased to 50 mm² or more. Use only finely stranded, tinned marine cables.
Polarity and voltage check: Before final connection, always check polarity and voltage. Reversed polarity can destroy expensive on-board electronics.
Mounting: Secure the battery with retaining brackets or straps to minimise vibration – despite vibration resistance, this increases safety.

Parallel connection and 24 V systems

To increase capacity (e.g. from 100 to 200 Ah), two identical AGM batteries can be connected in parallel. Ensure the same type, same age and same state of charge. For 24-volt on-board systems, two 12 V units are connected in series. Due to the extremely low internal resistance of AGM batteries, the use of a battery monitor or a combined charger and split relay is recommended so that the starter and consumer batteries remain properly separated.

Charging and care

The right charging technique determines the service life. Use only chargers with an AGM characteristic (final charging voltage 14.6–14.8 V). Too high voltages lead to gassing and drying out, too low ones cause capacity to decline. A modern IUoU charger with a temperature sensor is particularly valuable in the engine compartment in summer. In winter, a maintenance charger (e.g. 13.6 V float voltage) protects against harmful deep discharge and sulphation. Corroded terminals can be cleaned with a terminal brush or fine emery cloth; then fit the terminal caps.

AGM vs. gel vs. lithium – which technology for the boat?

The question of the right battery technology occupies many skippers. In our detailed comparison of AGM vs. gel vs. LiFePO4 we have worked out the differences in detail. Here is the short version for the marine sector:

Gel batteries: Also leak-proof and very cycle-resistant (up to 1000 cycles at 50 % DoD), but the internal resistance is higher than with AGM. As a result, cold cranking currents are lower, and they are more sensitive to overcharging. An option for pure consumer applications without high starting requirements, but less suitable for single-circuit systems with a starting function.
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4): Extremely light (weight saving up to 70 %), high usable capacity (up to 90 % discharge), thousands of cycles. However, the price is quickly three to five times that of a comparable AGM, and integration into existing alternator regulators often requires a battery management system (BMS) with specific charging characteristics.
AGM: The middle ground – high starting currents, cycle-resistant, completely maintenance-free and straightforward to handle. Almost any standard on-board charger can handle an AGM, and the costs are entirely competitive.

For the vast majority of leisure skippers who want a robust, inexpensive and straightforward overall system, there is no way around AGM.

Which AGM boat battery for Bayliner, Bavaria or Sea Ray?

Every boatyard has its own space conditions and power requirements. We have analysed the most popular models and give specific recommendations:

Bayliner: Models such as the 175, 185 or 210 are often fitted with smaller petrol engines (3.0 l to 4.3 l MPI) and have a compact battery compartment. An 80 Ah AGM provides sufficient starting current and at the same time supplies the basic on-board system. For larger bowriders (VR4, 240) with a sound system and additional consumers, a 100 Ah version should be used.
Bavaria: Volvo Penta or Yanmar diesels are often installed in yacht construction – these require high cold cranking currents. For the Bavaria Cruiser 33/35 we recommend a 100 Ah AGM with at least 850 A CCA as a starter, combined with a second 100 Ah battery as a house battery. On the Bavaria Sport 330/350, a 140 Ah battery as a central service battery is a safe buffer.
Sea Ray: American runabouts and express cruisers such as the Sundancer 280 or 320 are electrically demanding – multiple displays, refrigerator, microwave, electric toilets. A dual-battery system with two 100 Ah AGM batteries connected in parallel or a single 140 Ah unit for the consumer side is advisable here. The starter battery can then be a separate 80 Ah AGM.

Purchase criteria and value-for-money tips

When buying an AGM boat battery, you are faced with a wide range of brands and offers. This checklist will help you make an informed decision:

Capacity (C20) matched to daily consumption: Calculate your actual power requirement (list of consumers, operating time). Choose a battery that covers twice the planned daily consumption so that you do not fall below 50 % discharge.
Cold cranking current (CCA): The value must match your engine's starting requirement. For diesel engines, allow a reserve of at least 20 %.
Cycle resistance: Look for the cycle rating at 50 % DoD. Reputable manufacturers document this value. A figure above 600 indicates high lead quality.
Terminal type: Round terminals with M8 thread (positive terminal tapered) are common. Check whether your cables fit, or order adapters at the same time.
Weight: A higher weight at the same capacity indicates thicker plates and more active mass – this generally extends the service life.
Customer reviews: Read about the experiences of other skippers.

Avoid cheap imports without traceable data specifications.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How long does an AGM boat battery last?

With proper handling and regular full charging, high-quality AGM batteries achieve 500 to 800 cycles at 50 % depth of discharge. In typical leisure boat use with around 30–50 days of use per season, the service life depends on use, state of charge, temperature and care. What matters is the final charging voltage (max. 14.8 V) and that deep discharge below 10.5 V is avoided.

Can I also use an AGM battery as a starter battery?

Yes, absolutely. Because of their low internal resistance, AGM batteries are excellent starters. They deliver very high currents (CCA) spontaneously and are also cycle-resistant. They are therefore the first choice for boats with only one battery circuit.

What does CCA mean for a marine battery?

CCA (Cold Cranking Amperes) is the cold cranking current that a battery can deliver for 30 seconds at -18 °C without the voltage dropping below 7.2 V. The higher the CCA value, the greater the starting power. For boats this value is particularly important according to the EN standard, as heavy diesel engines or large V8 petrol engines often have to be started.

How do I charge an AGM boat battery correctly?

Use a charger with a specific AGM characteristic (final charging voltage 14.6–14.8 V). Modern AGM chargers detect the battery type automatically and adjust the phases (bulk, absorption, float). Avoid old transformer chargers without voltage regulation – they can overcharge the battery and cause permanent damage.

Can I connect two boat batteries in parallel?

Yes, for this the two batteries should be as identical as possible (same capacity, same age, same type). The capacity adds up, the voltage remains at 12 V. Ensure a sufficient cable cross-section (at least 35 mm²) for the connecting cables. A central positive distribution and a common earth point are ideal.

Is an AGM battery really leak-proof?

Absolutely. Because the acid is bound in glass mats and the closed VRLA design, no liquid can escape even if the casing cracks or at extreme angles of heel. This makes it particularly safe for installation below deck or in the engine compartment.

Which battery for a Bayliner boat?

For most Bayliner models (160 to 240), an AGM 80 Ah or 100 Ah is well suited. Compact bowriders manage with 80 Ah; for larger boats and if a stereo system and cool box are added, 100 Ah is the safer choice. Our team will be happy to advise you based on your exact boat type.

How do I look after my boat battery in winter?

Store the battery fully charged in a cool, dry place (above 0 °C, but not above 20 °C). Connect a maintenance charger that compensates for self-discharge and maintains a permanent full charge at 13.5–13.8 V without overcharging the battery. Clean the terminals and cover them against creep currents.
