AGM Battery for Opel Adam – Electronicx
AGM Battery for Opel Adam – Perfect-fit energy for your city runabout
The Opel Adam is the stylish customisation talent among small cars – yet its tightly packed electrical system with start-stop system, electric power steering, infotainment and numerous comfort consumers places high demands on the power supply. From the factory, Opel fitted the Adam predominantly with conventional EFB batteries (Enhanced Flooded Battery), which are designed for vehicles with start-stop automatic. An AGM battery (Absorbent Glass Mat) however offers a significant increase in performance: it charges up to four times faster, copes far better with the frequent charge/discharge cycles of the start-stop system and remains reliable even at wintry temperatures.
Especially in urban stop-and-go traffic, where the Adam feels at home, the battery is extremely stressed. Short journeys, frequent starting and the permanent supply of power to control units – the classic EFB battery often reaches its limits here. The vibration-resistant AGM technology with its electrolyte bound in glass fleece, on the other hand, is ideally suited to this continuous load. You will find the battery in the Opel Adam easily accessible in the engine bay at the front left (passenger side), directly behind the headlight. The OE numbers are typically 1349824, 1350053 or 95514570 – at Electronicx we offer you the matching AGM battery with exactly the required specifications for your vehicle, matched to the fitted base strip type and the correct terminal arrangement.
Technical data – AGM battery for Opel Adam
The following specifications are based on the battery size approved by Opel for the Adam (LN2/DIN L2) and the requirements of modern start-stop systems. These values ensure that your new AGM battery fits perfectly into the standard holder and reliably supplies all electrical consumers.
| Specification | Value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 12 volts | Standard on-board voltage for all Opel Adam models (petrol). |
| Capacity (Ah) | 60 Ah – 70 Ah | Recommended capacity for the Opel Adam. 60 Ah for base engine variants without extensive additional equipment; 70 Ah for vehicles with seat heating, heated steering wheel or premium sound system. |
| Cold cranking current (CCA) | 640 A – 760 A (EN standard) | Ensures reliable engine starting even at -18 °C outside temperature. A CCA value of at least 640 A is essential for the small, free-revving Opel engines. |
| Dimensions (LxWxH) | 242 mm x 175 mm x 190 mm | Standard size of the LN2/DIN L2 battery. Fits exactly into the mount in the Adam's engine bay. The height of 190 mm is crucial, as a taller casing could collide with the bonnet. |
| Terminal arrangement | 0 (positive terminal right, negative terminal left – view from the front onto the terminals) | This arrangement is obligatory in the Opel Adam. Mixing it up means the standard cables are not long enough and cannot be connected safely. |
| Base strip | B13 | Standard mounting foot for the Opel Adam. The B13 base strip ensures firm anchoring in the console, essential for vibration resistance. |
| Service life | 5 – 7 years | With proper installation and regular use of the vehicle, a high-quality AGM battery can give you a longer service life than a conventional EFB battery. |
The decisive values for your Opel Adam are the terminal arrangement "0" and the base strip "B13". A differing cold cranking current of at least 640 A also reliably covers the 1.4-litre engine variants. For vehicles with a factory-fitted start-stop system (almost without exception from model year 2013 onwards), we recommend not falling back on a lower EFB specification, but choosing the more cycle-resistant AGM technology in order to support the energy management optimally.
Compatible model years and engine variants
The Opel Adam was built from 2012 to 2019 and did not undergo a comprehensive facelift during its production period that would have fundamentally changed the battery specification. Nevertheless, there are differences in the optimal battery capacity depending on engine and equipment. As a basic rule: every Opel Adam with a start-stop system benefits massively from switching to a high-performance AGM battery. Even vehicles from the first model years without start-stop can be retrofitted, as the alternator and charge management support this technology without any problems.
- Model years 2012 – 2014 (pre-facelift): Vehicles with and without start-stop. OE equipment often still with an EFB battery (60 Ah/550 A). Switching to a 60 Ah AGM battery is a direct plug-and-play upgrade for greater reliability and reserve capacity, especially in cold winters.
- Model years 2014 – 2019 (post-facelift): Start-stop system almost consistently standard. OE setup frequently changed to an EFB with 65 Ah or occasionally to 70 Ah with optional equipment. A 70 Ah AGM battery is the premium recommendation here in order to make full use of the advanced recuperation of the electrical system.
- Engine variants: All fitted engines are pure petrol engines. The 1.2-litre engine (51 kW) and the 1.4-litre engines (64 kW and 74 kW) require a CCA of at least 640 A. The economical 1.0 turbo (66 kW and 85 kW) with direct injection also places this requirement due to higher compression and faster starting procedures. A diesel was not offered in the Adam. For all engines, AGM technology is ideal due to its low-vibration, sealed construction.
The compatibility of the AGM battery is given throughout the entire life cycle of the Opel Adam. Have you never replaced the service book-maintained battery? Then now is the perfect time for the upgrade. Our recommendation: For most Adam drivers, the AGM 60 Ah is the balanced and completely sufficient solution; however, anyone commuting with a maximum sound system, auxiliary heater or many short journeys is ideally advised to choose the AGM 70 Ah.
Installation instructions step by step
Safety note: Before you begin the battery replacement, switch off the ignition, remove the remote key and take off all metallic objects such as watches or rings. Open the bonnet and leave the vehicle to rest for 10 minutes so that the control unit can enter sleep mode. You will need a 10 mm open-end or socket spanner and possibly a terminal puller.
- Step 1 – Open the engine bay and release the battery cover: Open the bonnet. The battery is located at the front left (passenger side) in a black plastic tray. On some models it is concealed by an additional cover or a control unit on the battery. Release the retaining clips of the cover and remove it.
- Step 2 – Disconnect the earth strap (negative): Loosen the 10 mm nut on the negative terminal (-), recognisable by the black cable and the minus sign. Carefully lift off the terminal clamp and bend the cable to the side so that no contact with the battery can occur. This is the most important safety step.
- Step 3 – Disconnect the positive terminal: Fold back the red protective cap of the positive terminal (+). Also loosen the 10 mm nut here and lift off the terminal clamp. Make sure that the spanner does not touch the positive terminal and body earth at the same time.
- Step 4 – Release the battery holder: The battery is secured on the underside, towards the front of the vehicle, by a holder with a 13 mm screw. Loosen this screw and remove the retaining bracket. It sits in a locating groove on the base strip B13.
- Step 5 – Remove the old battery: Lift the old battery straight out by the carrying handle. Depending on the model, it can weigh up to 17 kg. Dispose of it properly at a retailer or bring it to our take-back point – the battery deposit is regulated by law.
- Step 6 – Prepare the new AGM battery: Compare the new battery with the old one: dimensions (242x175x190 mm), terminal arrangement 0 (positive on the right) and base strip B13 must match. Remove the transport protection caps from the terminals.
- Step 7 – Insert the new battery: Carefully place the new AGM battery into the mount. The base strip must engage in the recess of the console. The battery must sit horizontally and without play.
- Step 8 – Secure the battery: Insert the retaining bracket back into the locating groove of the base strip and tighten the 13 mm fixing screw firmly by hand. The battery must no longer be able to move.
- Step 9 – Connect the positive terminal: When connecting, always begin with the positive terminal. Fit the terminal clamp and tighten the nut. Fold the red protective cap back over the terminal.
- Step 10 – Connect the negative terminal and check coding: Fit the negative terminal clamp and tighten it. A small spark is normal. On the Opel Adam (Gamma platform / Fiat Small LWB), no mandatory coding/learning of the battery sensor via OBD2 is necessary, as the energy management adapts independently. However, you should turn the steering wheel once from lock to lock and recalibrate the windows and clock. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
Duration: approx. 25 minutes. Important note: If the start-stop function does not work for a few driving cycles after the replacement, this is normal – the control unit relearns the parameters of the new battery independently.
Advantages of the AGM battery in the Opel Adam
- Up to 360,000 engine starts: A premium AGM battery copes with the high cycling of the start-stop system in urban use – that is three times the cycle stability of a conventional EFB battery.
- Recuperation without energy loss: The extremely low internal resistances of AGM technology absorb braking energy recuperation much more efficiently and store it for your next traffic light start.
- Short-trip resistant: Even with frequent journeys under 5 km, the battery is recharged faster thanks to improved charge acceptance, which effectively prevents deep discharge.
- Safe cold start down to -30 °C: With up to 760 A CCA (depending on model), you get the 1.0 turbo or 1.4-litre engines running immediately even in the deepest frost in the Adam, without any cranking.
- Vibration-resistant and leak-proof: The electrolyte bound in glass fleece makes the AGM battery absolutely shake-proof, and even in an accident with a cracked casing no battery acid escapes.
- Power supply for the sensors: Your parking pilot, automatic climate control and touchscreen infotainment work at constant voltage – flickering or brief dropouts under high load (fan on max) are a thing of the past.
- Maintenance-free over the entire service life: No topping up with distilled water required. You install the battery and have peace of mind.
Frequently asked questions – AGM battery Opel Adam
- Which AGM battery fits the Opel Adam?
- For your Opel Adam, an AGM battery of size LN2 (DIN L2) with terminal layout 0 (positive terminal on the right) and base strip B13 is the correct choice. Depending on your vehicle's equipment, we recommend capacities between 60 Ah and 70 Ah.
- How long does the AGM battery last in the Opel Adam?
- Under normal operating conditions and with an annual mileage of at least 10,000 kilometres, you can expect a service life of 5 to 7 years. It is therefore superior to a conventional EFB battery by at least 2 to 3 years. The extremely stable glass fleece technology prevents the usual capacity loss caused by sludge formation and plate corrosion.
- Do I need to code the battery after replacement?
- No, this is not necessary in the Opel Adam. Unlike many modern BMW or Audi models, the Adam does not have a central battery management system (BMS) that absolutely requires re-coding of the serial number when the battery is replaced. The control unit automatically detects the changed charge capacity and adaptively adjusts the charging characteristic within a few driving cycles.
- What does an AGM battery for the Opel Adam cost?
- The price depends on the capacity (Ah), cold cranking current (CCA) and technology of the battery. At Electronicx you will find suitable AGM batteries at fair prices – you can see the current price directly on each product page. If you do not install the battery yourself, the costs for installation and, if applicable, coding at a workshop are added; these are set by the workshop.
- Where do I find the battery in the Opel Adam?
- The battery is located in the engine compartment of the Opel Adam, at the front left (passenger side) directly behind the headlight. It is housed in a robust plastic tray and often protected by a black cover. A look in the owner's manual under the chapter "Maintenance" or "Engine compartment" shows you the exact position on a schematic drawing.
