AGM Battery for Renault Scenic – A Perfect Fit for Energy
With its advanced electrical system, standard start-stop automatic function and a wide range of comfort consumers, the Renault Scenic places high demands on the starter battery. Conventional flooded batteries quickly reach their limits here, as they are not designed for the enormous cyclic load that occurs with every stop at traffic lights and restart. The AGM battery (Absorbent Glass Mat) was developed precisely for this: it reliably delivers high starting currents, absorbs braking energy in an instant and withstands even frequent deep discharges without loss of capacity.
Renault frequently fitted EFB batteries as standard in the Scenic III (2009–2016) and Scenic IV (2016–2022), but AGM types were already used in the more powerful or fully equipped variants. There is nothing standing in the way of upgrading to a more powerful AGM – on the contrary: it protects the sensitive on-board electronics, stabilises the voltage even on many short journeys and avoids nasty surprises at sub-zero temperatures. Typical capacities are in a range of 60 to 95 Ah, and the cold cranking current is between 600 and 850 A (EN) depending on the engine. In everyday terms this means: virtually every Scenic with a diesel engine (1.5 dCi, 1.6 dCi, 2.0 dCi) or turbo petrol engine (TCe 115/130/140/160) can benefit from an AGM battery.
The installation location is – characteristically for the Scenic – in the engine compartment on the right-hand side of the vehicle (passenger side on left-hand drive vehicles). There the battery sits behind the headlight, often protected under a plastic cover. Although this position is easy to access, it demands a particularly vibration-resistant design, because engine vibrations and temperature fluctuations put daily stress on the energy storage device. With its electrolyte bound in glass fleece, AGM technology remains completely maintenance-free, leak-proof and cycle-resistant – even under extreme conditions.
Technical data – AGM battery for Renault Scenic
The following values refer to the most common AGM type recommended by us for Scenic III and IV. It covers over 80% of all engine variants and corresponds exactly to the OE specifications of the models with a start-stop system. Should your vehicle require different dimensions or a higher capacity, you will of course find the matching equivalent in our range.
| Specification | Value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 12 V | Standard on-board voltage of all Scenic models (excluding hybrid systems) |
| Capacity (Ah) | 70 Ah (C20) | Sufficient reserve for engine compartment electronics, seat heating, infotainment and air conditioning in stop mode |
| Cold cranking current (CCA) | 760 A (EN) / 850 A (SAE) | Reliable starting even at -30 °C – also with the high oil viscosity of the dCi diesels |
| Dimensions (L×W×H) | 278 × 175 × 190 mm | Corresponds to the L3/H7 standard and fits exactly into the original battery tray of the Scenic |
| Terminal arrangement | 0 (positive right, negative left) | Typical arrangement for Renault – minimises the risk of confusion and cable stress |
| Base bar | B13 | Perfectly fitting attachment with the standard holder; no shaking or chafing |
| Service life | 5–7 years | Average service life under normal start-stop conditions |
The stated cold cranking current of 760 amperes according to the EN standard means that the battery maintains a stable voltage even at −18 °C and under full load, in order to reliably supply the starter and glow plugs of modern common-rail diesels (dCi). The compact dimensions of 278 mm in length ensure that sufficient space remains for the wiring and that the lid of the battery box closes flush. Our experienced service technicians confirm: this combination of high cold performance and precisely fitting design makes the AGM the ideal second-battery or primary-battery solution for your Scenic.
Compatible model years and engine variants
AGM technology is suitable for virtually all Renault Scenic models from model years 2009 to 2022, provided the vehicle is equipped with a start-stop system. Owners of older Scenic II models (2003–2009) without stop automatic function also benefit from the cycle resistance if high-current consumers such as sound systems or stationary air conditioning are installed – for these models, however, we recommend a case-by-case check. The clear recommendation is for the generations III and IV, in which the AGM plays a role as an option or standard equipment from the factory.
- Model years 2009–2016 (Scenic III, incl. Grand Scenic): With the introduction of this model, the first start-stop systems made their debut. AGM batteries were fitted here primarily in the powerful diesel variants (2.0 dCi 150/160) and the better-equipped petrol engines (1.2 TCe 130). A subsequent replacement of an EFB with an AGM is possible without modification.
- Model years 2016–2022 (Scenic IV, incl. Grand Scenic): In the final combustion-engine generation, Renault relied across the board on start-stop and recuperation. Even the smaller engines (1.5 dCi 110, 1.3 TCe 140) require a cycle-resistant AGM. The OE reference here is usually 70 Ah / 760 A. All AGM batteries we offer are approved for these model years.
- Engine variants: Compatible with all dCi diesels: 1.5 dCi 110/130, 1.6 dCi 130, 2.0 dCi 150/160. For petrol engines, suitable for: 1.2 TCe 115/130, 1.3 TCe 115/140/160, 1.6 SCe 115. Mild-hybrid versions (if present) can also be fitted with the same 12 V AGM.
If your vehicle does not have start-stop, you can also switch to AGM – the higher cold-start performance and vibration resistance then benefit you especially in winter and on long motorway journeys. However, note that the onboard power manager may then work with a changed charging characteristic; professional coding ensures that the full AGM performance is available.
Installation instructions step by step
Safety first: Switch off the ignition, remove the remote key and let the vehicle rest for at least 15 minutes so that all control units enter sleep mode. Have the necessary tools ready (10 mm or 13 mm open-end/ring spanner, Torx T30, terminal grease, gloves).
- Open the bonnet and remove the battery cover: On most Scenic models, the battery is located at the front right behind the headlight under a plastic cover. Release the clips of the cover and carefully remove it.
- Secure the power supply (optional): Connect a memory saver box to the OBD interface to retain seat and radio positions as well as window regulator settings.
- Disconnect the negative terminal (black): Loosen the clamp of the negative cable with a 10 mm spanner and lift it off. Secure the cable to the side to prevent a short circuit.
- Disconnect the positive terminal (red): Proceed in the same way. Make sure that the spanner does not touch the body and the positive terminal at the same time.
- Release the retaining bracket: At the lower edge of the battery there is a mounting bracket or a claw screw (10 mm or 13 mm head). Remove this and take off the retaining clamp.
- Remove the old battery: Lift the battery straight out of the tray. Use the integrated carrying handle or a battery lifter – the unit weighs about 20 kg.
- Clean and check the tray: Remove any corrosion residue with a wire brush. Check the degassing hose (if present) for correct seating.
- Insert the new AGM battery: Insert the battery so that the positive terminal is on the right (in the direction of travel). The bottom rail B13 must engage cleanly in the recess. Tighten the retaining bracket hand-tight (do not overtighten).
- Connect the terminals in the correct order: First positive, then negative. After tightening, apply a little terminal grease to both contact points to prevent corrosion.
- Close the battery cover and let the system start up: Close the cover, start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes so that the control units can reinitialise. The start-stop light goes out after a short drive.
Duration: approx. 20–30 minutes. On vehicles with a battery management system (BMS) – mainly Scenic IV, but also some Scenic III after facelift – the new battery must be coded. Via the OBD interface, a diagnostic device communicates the battery size (Ah), type (AGM) and serial number to the energy management. Without this coding, the start-stop function may fail to work or the battery may age prematurely. Our installation service will do this for you; alternatively, we will gladly explain the procedure with commercially available diagnostic tools.
Advantages of the AGM battery in the Renault Scenic
- Longer service life in start-stop operation: While a standard EFB often weakens after just 2 years under intensive cyclic load, AGM batteries deliver constant power over a longer period; the actual lifespan depends on use, charging, temperature and care.
- Up to 850 A cold cranking current: Even at -30 °C, the dCi diesel starts immediately – higher oil viscosities and cold have no chance.
- Vibration-resistant up to 20 g: The stable glass fleece prevents plate abrasion and gives the battery extreme resistance to engine vibrations in the Scenic engine bay.
- Maintenance-free and leak-proof: No topping up with distilled water, no gassing – the AGM remains sealed and safe even in difficult installation positions.
- Recuperation-optimised: The low internal resistance (approx. 3–4 mΩ) enables lightning-fast absorption of braking energy and thus protects the alternator.
- Protection of the on-board electronics: Stabilises the voltage for control units, sensors, touchscreen and climate control – no flickering or dropouts.
- Increased start-stop cycle resistance: Designed for over 300,000 engine starts – more than enough for many years in city traffic.
Frequently asked questions – AGM battery Renault Scenic
- Which AGM battery fits the Renault Scenic?
- For the vast majority of all Scenic III and IV with 4-cylinder engine, we recommend a 70 Ah AGM with 760 A cold start current (EN), dimensions 278 × 175 × 190 mm and terminal arrangement positive right. This corresponds to the OE dimension and covers engine variants from the 1.5 dCi 110 to the 2.0 dCi 160 as well as all TCe petrol engines. For particularly powerful diesel variants or additional consumers, an 80 Ah AGM may be the better choice – please contact us.
- How long does the AGM battery last in the Renault Scenic?
- Under normal conditions with daily start-stop, our AGM batteries achieve a service life depending on use, charging, temperature and care. The decisive factor is the interaction of driving profile, maintenance-free operation and correct coding. Vehicles used mainly for short journeys can put more strain on the battery; here a half-yearly battery test with a conductance tester is worthwhile.
- Do I need to code the battery after replacement?
- For Scenic IV and Scenic III with BMS (usually from model year 2012), a battery re-registration is necessary. The diagnostic device informs the energy management system of the new capacity and the AGM type. Without coding, the start-stop automatic system often does not work optimally and the charging electronics operate with incorrect parameters. This step is an investment in the service life of your new battery.
- What does an AGM battery for the Renault Scenic cost?
- The price depends on the capacity (Ah), cold cranking current (CCA) and technology of the battery. At Electronicx you will find suitable AGM batteries at fair prices – you can see the current price directly on each product page. If you do not install the battery yourself, the costs for installation and, if applicable, coding at a workshop are added; these are set by the workshop.
- Where do I find the battery in the Renault Scenic?
- In all Scenic generations (II, III, IV), the starter battery is located in the engine compartment on the passenger side (right in the direction of travel). Behind the headlight you will see a black plastic cover secured with a few clips. Underneath, the battery sits on a sheet metal tray, fixed by a bracket. Access is good – you only need standing space in front of the vehicle to work comfortably.
