AGM Battery for Skoda Superb – Perfect-Fit Energy
The Skoda Superb is one of the most technically sophisticated vehicles in the mid-range segment. Even from the second generation onwards, with start-stop system and fully networked electrical system, it places high demands on the 12-volt battery. An AGM battery (Absorbent Glass Mat) is not an option here, but a necessity, in order to reliably supply the complex sensors, the recuperation management and the many comfort consumers. In the Superb, not only do the engine control unit, multimedia system and automatic climate control create continuous load, but driver assistance systems such as Travel Assist, the electric tailgate and the high-resolution Virtual Cockpit also demand a stable energy storage device.
Depending on the engine and model year, the battery is located in the engine compartment on the left – easily accessible under a black service cover – or in the boot for the plug-in hybrid variant. In the third generation (type 3V, 2015–2024), Skoda fitted almost exclusively AGM batteries at the factory, matched to a recuperation output of up to 21 kW in the braking energy recovery system. Typical OE original equipment manufacturers are Banner, Varta or Exide with specifications from 68 Ah to 95 Ah and cold cranking currents from 680 A to 850 A. Anyone who replaces a weak EFB or even a flooded battery with an AGM battery gains not only start-stop suitability, but also up to three times higher cycle stability and a more stable voltage level for the Superb's highly developed energy management.
At Electronicx you will find the exactly fitting AGM battery for every Skoda Superb – with tested dimensions, correct terminal arrangement and BEM-compatible technology. Whether for the 2.0 TDI, the sporty 2.0 TSI with 280 PS or the economical 1.5 TSI ACT: our AGM power storage devices ensure carefree mobility, even in wintry cold starts and frequent city traffic with many stop phases.
Technical Data – AGM Battery for Skoda Superb
The following overview summarises the relevant specifications of a typical AGM battery for the Skoda Superb. Depending on the vehicle configuration, different capacities are used – we have shown the key figures for the most common sizes.
| Specification | Value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 12 V | Electrical system voltage of all Superb generations; AGM delivers up to 14.8 V final charging voltage in recuperation mode. |
| Capacity (Ah) | 68 Ah – 95 Ah | Typical values: 68 Ah (1.5 TSI), 70 Ah (2.0 TDI), 80 Ah (2.0 TSI), 95 Ah (2.0 TDI 4x4, L&K, Sportline). Sufficient reserve for parking bumps, auxiliary heater and infotainment. |
| Cold Cranking Current (CCA) | 680 A – 850 A (EN) | Ensures a reliable start even at -18 °C; TDI models with high compression ratio benefit particularly from values above 750 A. |
| Dimensions (L×W×H) | H7/L4: 315 × 175 × 190 mm H8/L5: 353 × 175 × 190 mm |
H7 (e.g. 70 Ah) usually fits in the standard battery tray; H8 (80–95 Ah) requires a large mount, which is fitted at the factory in the Superb 3V for more powerful engines. |
| Terminal Arrangement | Positive terminal right (terminal arrangement 0) | When looking at the terminal side from the front, the positive terminal is on the right, the negative terminal on the left – identical to the factory specification for left-hand drive. |
| Base Strip | B13 (mounting ledge) | European standard base strip; ensures a secure hold in the original battery holder without additional adapters. |
| Service Life | 6 – 8 years (with proper care) | Thanks to the sealed VRLA design, no water loss; depending on driving profile and additional consumers, over 1,200 microcycles are possible. |
For the Superb, sufficient capacity (at least 68 Ah) and a CCA value of not less than 680 A are crucial, as the standard start-stop system calls for a high current pulse at every restart. In contrast to EFB, AGM technology still provides 760 A cold cranking current even at a charge of only 50% – a safety reserve that decides between »jump start« or »breakdown« in winter.
Compatible Model Years and Engine Variants
The AGM battery is the optimal choice for almost all Skoda Superb models with start-stop automatic and brake energy recuperation. However, the specific compatibility depends on the year of manufacture, engine and equipment line. Below is the detailed breakdown:
- Model years 2001–2008 (1st generation, type 3U): Factory-fitted mostly with a conventional wet battery. An AGM upgrade is possible, but not strictly necessary, as there is no start-stop. Nevertheless, drivers benefit from higher cycle stability when retrofitted consumers such as auxiliary heating or sound system are operated.
- Model years 2008–2015 (2nd generation, type 3T): From the 2013 facelift, start-stop became standard (e.g. 2.0 TDI GreenLine). In these variants, an EFB was often fitted at the factory, but it reaches its limits early. An AGM is the consistent, longer-lasting alternative and is retrospectively recommended by Skoda in the ET parts catalogue.
- Model years 2015–2024 (3rd generation, type 3V): Here Skoda consistently relied on AGM original equipment for all engine variants with start-stop. Exceptions are only a few base models without recuperation. Typical battery OE numbers: 5Q0 915 105 H (AGM 68 Ah), 3Q0 915 105 C (AGM 70 Ah), 5Q0 915 105 J (AGM 80 Ah) and 5Q0 915 105 L (AGM 95 Ah).
- Model years from 2024 (4th generation, B9): The new Superb IV also relies on highly developed AGM batteries with optional lithium buffer battery for mild-hybrid variants. The 12V AGM remains the backbone of the electrical system and is available in capacities between 70 Ah and 92 Ah.
Engine variants:
- Petrol with start-stop (1.5 TSI ACT, 2.0 TSI): Generally AGM 68–80 Ah, depending on comfort features. The active cylinder management engine (ACT) additionally stresses the battery through frequent engine starts – here a high-strength AGM is indispensable.
- Diesel with start-stop (2.0 TDI, 1.6 TDI): Require CCA values of at least 700 A, ideally 760–850 A, due to the higher compression and the powerful starter. The AGM ensures sufficient charge acceptance for the auxiliary heating even after many city drives.
- Plug-in hybrid (Superb iV 1.4 TSI/1.5 TSI PHEV): In addition to the high-voltage battery, a separate 12V AGM is installed, usually 50–60 Ah more compact in the boot or under the load floor. A replacement must be carried out exactly according to the manufacturer's specifications, as the BEM and HV safety logic are coupled.
Before purchasing, always check the E-code list of your vehicle registration document (PR numbers J0T, J1U, J2D etc.) and compare the minimum capacity stored in the service manual. At Electronicx, all AGM batteries are offered with a compatibility check based on the vehicle identification – this way you get the right replacement battery for your Superb.
Installation instructions step by step
Safety note: Switch off the ignition and take the remote key at least 5 metres away from the vehicle. Wait 15 minutes until all control units have entered sleep mode. Tools required: 10 mm and 13 mm ratchet or open-end wrench, needle-nose pliers, torch, terminal grease, diagnostic device (e.g. VCDS, OBDeleven or OBD11) for BEM coding.
- Remove battery cover: Open the bonnet. The battery is located on the left near the suspension strut tower under a black plastic cover. Release the clips (4 pieces) or turn the knurled screws 90°, carefully lift off the cover and set it aside.
- Disconnect negative terminal: Identifiable by the black cable and the minus sign. Loosen the 10 mm nut on the terminal connection of the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), pull off the negative terminal and secure it so that it cannot spring back – e.g. with a cable tie on the wiring harness.
- Disconnect positive terminal: Fold up the red protective cap, loosen the 10 mm nut and pull off the positive terminal. Also secure the cable to the side here.
- Detach vent hose: If a thin plastic hose is attached to the side of the battery (battery venting), carefully pull it off. The hose must be reattached later.
- Release battery holder: At the bottom of the battery tray you will find a retaining clamp with a 13 mm screw. Loosen this and fold the retaining bracket forwards. Sometimes you first have to remove a plastic cover over the retaining foot.
- Remove old battery: Lift the battery straight up – it weighs between 19 and 26 kg. Use the carrying handles (if present) and get help. Place the old battery on an acid-resistant surface.
- Clean battery tray: Check the tray for corrosion or moisture. Remove loose residue with a cloth. A light film of terminal grease or acid protection spray prevents oxidation.
- Fitting the new AGM battery: Insert the fresh battery in the correct orientation – positive terminal on the right, negative terminal on the left as seen in the direction of travel. Push it gently backwards until the base strip engages in the mount. The vent hole must (if present) face outwards so that the hose fits.
- Securing and connecting the terminals: Tighten the retaining bracket again (13 mm, approx. 15 Nm). Now connect the positive terminal first (10 mm, approx. 5 Nm) and fit the red cover. Then push on the negative terminal with IBS and tighten it. Do not forget to reconnect the vent hose.
- Fitting the cover and carrying out BEM coding: Clip the battery cover into place. Do not start the engine yet; instead connect the diagnostic device. Open control unit 19 (CAN gateway) or 61 (battery regulation) and adjust the adaptation values: set the serial number (e.g. the new 10-digit combination), the battery capacity in Ah and the technology to AGM. Without coding, the energy management runs with incorrect parameters – the start-stop function is restricted and service life drops.
Duration: about 25 minutes (including coding). If your Superb has dynamic voltage regulation (DSR), a short test drive with the lights and auxiliary heater switched on is advisable so that the system learns the new battery. All AGM batteries from Electronicx are supplied with a BEM-compatible data sheet containing the necessary coding data.
Advantages of the AGM battery in the Skoda Superb
- Up to 300 % more cycle stability compared with a standard flooded battery – a decisive durability factor, especially in city traffic with permanent start-stop.
- Cold cranking current of up to 850 A remains stable even when partially discharged; the 2.0 TDI starts after just 0.6 seconds even at sub-zero temperatures.
- Vibration-resistant glass fleece protects the plates against shocks, ideal for the tough engine bay of the Superb with sporty driving or long motorway journeys.
- Completely maintenance-free – no topping up with distilled water, no checking of the acid level; the sealed VRLA design prevents acid leakage.
- Faster charging through recuperation: AGM absorbs braking energy at up to 21 kW, which reduces fuel consumption in the Superb by around 0.2 l/100 km and lowers CO₂ emissions.
- Higher reserve capacity for comfort systems such as seat heating, auxiliary heater, multimedia system and electric tailgate – particularly important in the Superb Combi with a cool box.
- Tested fit: Thanks to terminal layout 0, base strip B13 and OE reference numbers such as 5Q0 915 105 H, the battery fits the Superb battery recess to the millimetre – without fiddling or adapters.
Frequently asked questions – AGM battery Skoda Superb
- Which AGM battery fits the Skoda Superb?
- For the third and fourth generation, we recommend an AGM with 70 Ah and 760 A CCA (e.g. Varta Silver Dynamic AGM 570 901 076) for most petrol and TDI engines. With high equipment levels or the 2.0 TDI 200 PS, an 80 Ah AGM (850 A) is the safe choice. Use our vehicle-specific battery finder by entering the KBA number – this way you avoid buying the wrong battery.
- How long does the AGM battery last in the Skoda Superb?
- The average service life is 6 to 8 years. The deciding factors are the driving profile and correct BEM coding: frequent short journeys under 10 km can increase the cycle load and reduce the service life to 5 years. After a replacement, the AGM starts out with around 1,200 microcycles, almost like new.
- Do I need to code the battery after replacement?
- Yes, on all Superb models with a start-stop system (from model year 2013) recoding of the battery energy management is mandatory. Without adjustment of the adaptive charging curve, the control unit does not recognise the new AGM, charges incorrectly and only releases the start-stop function to a limited extent. Simply reading the battery data out and back in is enough, as we briefly explain in our support video.
- What does an AGM battery for the Skoda Superb cost?
- In the Electronicx shop you can get tested AGM batteries for the Superb from 109 euros (e.g. Banner Running Bull AGM 70 Ah). Larger capacities such as 95 Ah cost around 169 euros. The offer includes free DHL shipping within Germany – considerably cheaper than workshop prices, which are often over 250 euros.
- Where do I find the battery in the Skoda Superb?
- In most Superb models (1st to 4th generation) the 12-volt battery is located in the engine bay on the left (driver's side). In the plug-in hybrid iV version it sits in the boot under the load floor on the right. Exceptions are a few right-hand-drive vehicles with a mirror-image arrangement. A visual check without tools is easy once the service cover has been removed.
