AGM Battery for VW Polo – Perfect-fit energy for your city car
The VW Polo is one of Germany's best-selling small cars – and for good reason. However, its compact technology, especially in modern specifications with start-stop system, recuperation and extensive comfort electronics, requires a powerful, cycle-resistant battery. The AGM battery (Absorbent Glass Mat) is the factory-recommended solution for almost all Polo models that come with start-stop technology as standard. Unlike conventional wet batteries or inexpensive EFB types, AGM technology binds the electrolyte in glass fleece – making it leak-proof, extremely vibration-resistant and able to withstand many times the number of charge-discharge cycles.
In the Polo, the starter battery is located in the engine compartment – depending on the engine variant and model year, either at the front left (driver's side) under a black plastic cover or, on BlueMotion models, secured with an additional textile strap. The typical OE specification provides for an AGM battery with 70 Ah and around 760 A cold cranking current (CCA), such as the Varta Silver Dynamic AGM in H6 size (LN3). Models with more powerful diesel engines or higher equipment levels occasionally use a larger H7/LN4 variant with 80 Ah.
For the complex electrical system of a start-stop Polo, a stable power supply and the ability to absorb braking energy in a fraction of a second are vital. The AGM battery delivers exactly these properties: it withstands over 350,000 engine starts, has a 40% higher cold start performance than equally sized EFB batteries and, thanks to its low internal resistance, reliably regenerates even after deep partial discharges. An investment that pays for itself after just a few winters.
Technical data – AGM battery for VW Polo
The following table shows the relevant specifications of a typical AGM battery for the VW Polo (type H6/LN3). Depending on the engine and model year, the installation position and capacity requirement may differ slightly – we recommend checking against your vehicle registration document or taking a quick look in the glovebox.
| Specification | Value | Significance for the VW Polo |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 12 V | Standard on-board voltage; covers all consumers from the starter to the seat heating. |
| Capacity (Ah) | 70 Ah | Sufficient reserve for start-stop phases and run-on consumers in short-distance driving. Depending on the engine, also 75 Ah or 80 Ah (H7/LN4). |
| Cold cranking current (CCA) | 760 A (EN) | At -18 °C, the battery delivers reliable starting power for petrol (1.0 TSI, 1.2 TSI) and diesel (1.6 TDI) engines. Extended variants up to 850 A possible. |
| Dimensions (L×W×H) | 278 × 175 × 190 mm | Standard size H6 (LN3); fits exactly into the Polo's original battery holder without modification. Larger H7 (315 mm length) only with an adapted retaining bracket. |
| Pole arrangement | 0 (positive terminal on the right) | When viewing the terminals from the front, positive is on the right. Almost exclusively this arrangement is fitted in the Polo – it is worth checking in advance. |
| Base strip | B13 (B14 for H7) | The lower mounting strip must match the vehicle mount. For H6 it is B13, for H7 you need B14. |
| Service life | 5–7 years | Typical life expectancy of the AGM battery in the Polo under demanding start-stop operation. With predominantly long-distance driving, 8+ years is also realistic. |
The capacity of 70 Ah represents an ideal compromise between weight and on-board power reserve. The cold cranking current of 760 A enables a vigorous engine start even in frost – important for a short-distance Polo in winter. The vibration-resistant glass fleece technology also absorbs the typical 3-cylinder vibrations and protects the plates from short circuits – a decisive longevity factor.
Compatible model years and engine variants
The AGM battery is used in the VW Polo when the vehicle is equipped with a start-stop system and usually with brake energy recuperation. This applies to large parts of the more recent model series. An overview of compatibility:
- Polo V (6R, 2009–2014): The first BlueMotion models with start-stop and 1.2 TSI / 1.6 TDI often came from the factory with an EFB battery. However, an AGM is a worthwhile upgrade with extended comfort features (seat heating, automatic climate control) or increased short-distance use. No coding required when retrofitting – the alternator characteristic remains compatible.
- Polo VI (6C, 2014–2017): With the introduction of Euro 6 and the widespread 1.0 TSI/1.4 TDI, AGM became standard equipment in all start-stop variants. From model year 2015, battery coding is required after replacement, as the BMS registers the battery parameters. Suitable batteries: 70 Ah H6, for more powerful diesels 75 Ah or 80 Ah H7.
- Polo VII (AW, 2017–2022): Across the engine range – 1.0 TSI, 1.5 TSI, 1.6 TDI – AGM is the standard with start-stop. The sporty GTI models with 2.0 TSI also use a powerful AGM with 70 Ah or 80 Ah (often H7) from the factory. Registering the battery type is essential here to avoid errors in the energy management.
If in doubt, a look at the label of the existing battery is enough: if it says "AGM" or the manufacturer's designation "VRLA", an AGM is already fitted. Vehicles without factory-fitted start-stop also benefit from the upgrade – especially with many short journeys or high accessory consumption. Please note: when retrofitting, the new AGM battery must have the same installation dimensions and the matching base strip.
Installation instructions step by step
Switch off the ignition, remove the ignition key and leave the vehicle to rest for at least 10 minutes so that all control units can shut down. You will need a 10 mm open-end or socket spanner, some terminal grease, a clean cloth and, if necessary, a memory saver to retain radio stations and window regulator settings.
- Open the bonnet and remove the battery cover: The plastic cover over the battery is usually just clipped on or secured with two clips. Lift it off carefully to gain access to the terminals.
- Loosen the negative terminal (-) first: Loosen the 10 mm nut on the negative terminal (black cable) and remove the cable. Bend the cable to the side until it no longer has contact with the battery. This prevents short circuits during the rest of the work.
- Loosen the positive terminal (+): Now loosen the nut of the positive terminal (red cable / red cap) and remove the cable. Make sure that the spanner does not touch any other metal in the engine bay.
- Remove the battery holder: At the lower end of the battery there is a retaining clamp that is fixed to the battery carrier with a 13 mm screw. Loosen the screw and remove the clamp.
- Lift out the old battery: An AGM battery weighs between 19 and 22 kg – lift it out with a straight back and, if possible, with a second person. On some Polo models, the heat-insulating battery cloth must be removed first.
- Prepare and insert the new battery: Compare the polarity and base strip of the new AGM with the old battery. Apply a thin coat of terminal grease to the terminals, place the battery in the recess and align it with the holder. The terminals must sit in exactly the same position as before.
- Fix the holder: Reinsert the lower retaining clamp and tighten the 13 mm screw hand-tight (approx. 20 Nm). Briefly wobble the battery to check that it is securely seated.
- Connect the positive terminal first: Push the positive cable onto the positive terminal and tighten the nut. Ensure good contact and that the red cover is correctly seated.
- Connect the negative terminal: Attach the negative cable to the negative terminal and tighten it. A small spark is normal and shows that the connection is made.
- Fit the battery cover and start the engine: Refit the plastic cover. Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes so that the battery management system (BMS) adapts to the new voltage. Carry out a window regulator calibration as a test if necessary.
Duration: The entire replacement takes approx. 20 to 30 minutes.
Important note on start-stop coding: On Polo models from model year 2014 (6C and AW) with a start-stop system, the new battery must be registered. To do this, the battery type must be set to "AGM" and the capacity as well as a new serial number stored in the BMS using a diagnostic device (VCDS, OBD11 or manufacturer tool). Without this registration, the start-stop function may remain deactivated or the charging behaviour may work suboptimally. If in doubt, have the coding carried out by a specialist workshop – it takes around 15 minutes and ensures the full service life of your new AGM battery.
Advantages of the AGM battery in the VW Polo
- 3 times higher cycle stability: Over 350,000 engine starts – tailored to the high starting frequencies of the Polo in inner-city stop-and-go traffic.
- Vibration-resistant even with 3-cylinder engines: The glass fleece fixes the plates and dampens engine vibrations; no loose parts, no acid stratification.
- Maintenance-free and leak-proof: No topping up with distilled water required – even when tilted or in an accident, the electrolyte remains bound.
- Up to 850 A cold start: Even at -18 °C the starter turns powerfully – reliable diesel starts in winter without delay.
- Optimal regenerative charging: The AGM absorbs braking energy in an instant and thus reduces fuel consumption by up to 0.2 l/100 km in real city traffic.
- Longevity of 5 to 7 years: Twice as long as an EFB battery under the same conditions – this saves maintenance costs in the long term.
- Stable on-board voltage during all load changes: Infotainment, seat heating and air conditioning continue to run without flickering even during the starting procedure.
- Deep discharge safe: After an accidental discharge (e.g. parking lights left on overnight), the AGM reaches over 95 % of its original capacity again after a full charge.
Frequently asked questions – AGM battery VW Polo
- Which AGM battery fits the VW Polo?
- For most Polo models with factory-fitted start-stop, we recommend an AGM battery in H6 (LN3) format with 70 Ah and 760 A cold cranking current – such as the Electronicx Premium AGM 70. For more powerful diesels (from 75 kW) or the Polo GTI, the next size up, H7 (LN4) with 80 Ah and 800 A CCA, often fits. Polarity is 0 (positive terminal on the right). Before buying, check the base rail (B13 for H6, B14 for H7) and the installation dimensions (L278×W175×H190 mm).
- How long does the AGM battery last in the VW Polo?
- With average mileage and an intact charging system, an AGM in a start-stop Polo achieves 5 to 7 years of service life. Without start-stop operation or with predominantly long-distance driving, even 8 years and more are possible. What matters is correct coding after installation and avoiding weeks of downtime without a trickle charger.
- Do I need to code the battery after replacement?
- Yes, for Polo models from model year 2014 (6C and AW) with a start-stop system, battery coding is absolutely essential. The battery management system (BMS) must register the new AGM with its type, capacity and serial number. Without adaptation, error messages in the instrument cluster, restricted start-stop function and premature ageing can occur. Many diagnostic devices (e.g. VCDS, OBD11) carry out the procedure in about 10 minutes.
- What does an AGM battery for the VW Polo cost?
- High-quality AGM batteries for the Polo are available from specialist retailers from around €89. Premium brands such as Varta or Banner are between €110 and €160. Installation at a partner workshop can be booked nationwide on request.
- Where do I find the battery in the VW Polo?
- In the Polo, the starter battery is always located in the engine compartment – front left (driver's side) under a black plastic cover. In BlueMotion variants, the battery is often additionally secured with a textile strap to insulate against cold and heat. There is no second battery in the Polo.
