AGM Battery for VW T5 – Perfect-fit energy for Transporter, Multivan and California
The VW T5 is a true commercial vehicle original – whether on the building site, as a family van or as a camping holiday machine in the California version. The electrical system architecture of this model calls for a reliable, cycle-resistant and vibration-proof battery that can cope with daily demands. This is where the AGM battery comes in. AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat: a type of battery in which the sulphuric acid is bound in a glass fibre mat. This makes the battery leak-proof, maintenance-free and particularly resistant to vibrations – a decisive advantage in the tough everyday life of a T5.
In the VW T5, the starter battery is located in the engine compartment at the front left, directly under the bonnet. In some equipment variants (Multivan with auxiliary heater, California with camping equipment), there is also a second battery under the driver's seat. AGM technology makes double sense here: it not only supplies the necessary cold cranking current at all times, but also copes much better with deep discharges, such as those that occur when camping or during frequent start-stop operation, than conventional lead-acid batteries. The ADAC confirms that AGM batteries can withstand up to three times more charge and discharge cycles than conventional starter batteries (Source: ADAC Ratgeber Starterbatterien, 2024).
The factory-fitted OE battery equipment of the VW T5 varied depending on the model year and engine: in the early years (2003–2009), VW mostly installed classic lead-acid batteries with 70–80 Ah. With the introduction of the T5 GP (facelift from 2009) and the BlueMotion models with start-stop system, Wolfsburg then increasingly relied on EFB and later AGM batteries. Anyone who retrofits an AGM battery to an older T5 today benefits even without start-stop from the significantly longer service life, better cold-start performance in winter and a reliable power supply for many comfort consumers such as seat heating, auxiliary heater, infotainment and electric sliding doors. In particular, the sensitive electrical system sensors of modern retrofits and energy recovery during overrun (recuperation) work noticeably more efficiently with an AGM battery.
The typical capacities for the VW T5 are between 60 Ah and 95 Ah, with the cold cranking current CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) depending on capacity being between 600 and 850 amperes. This means the 2.0 TDI with 140 PS starts confidently even in frost. Also crucial for the T5 is the exact terminal arrangement (terminal 0, positive terminal on the right) and the matching base strip (B13) so that the battery can be installed without an adapter bracket. All AGM batteries for the VW T5 available from Electronicx meet these specifications ex works.
Whether as a workhorse, camper van or everyday companion: if you treat your VW T5 to an AGM battery, you are investing in readiness to start, security of supply and noticeable longevity – completely maintenance-free. In the following sections you will learn everything about the technical data, compatibility with various model years and engines, and step-by-step installation.
Technical data – AGM battery for VW T5
The right AGM battery for the VW T5 must be precisely matched to the electrical system architecture and the installation location. The following table shows the most important specifications that a T5-compatible AGM battery must have. All values are based on the manufacturer specifications from our range (Varta Silver Dynamic AGM, Banner Running Bull AGM, Exide AGM).
| Specification | Value | Meaning for the VW T5 |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 12 V | Standard electrical system voltage of all VW T5 models. Suitable for alternator and starting system. |
| Capacity (Ah) | 70 Ah / 80 Ah / 92 Ah / 95 Ah | Depending on engine and consumers: 70 Ah for 2.0 TDI base; 80–95 Ah for 2.5 TDI, BiTDI or with auxiliary heater. More capacity = longer runtime of comfort consumers with ignition off. |
| Cold cranking current (CCA) | 680 A / 720 A / 800 A / 850 A | CCA to EN standard. For the 2.5 TDI and the 2.0 BiTDI, at least 720 A is recommended. At temperatures below -18 °C, this is decisive for a reliable engine start. |
| Dimensions (L×W×H) | 278×175×190 mm / 315×175×190 mm / 353×175×190 mm | The standard battery tray in the T5 engine bay accepts these three sizes. Measure the battery compartment before purchase. H6/LN3 = 278 mm, H7/LN4 = 315 mm, H8/LN5 = 353 mm. |
| Terminal layout | Terminal 0 (positive terminal on the right) | Typical of the VW T5: when looking at the terminal side, the positive terminal is on the right. The wrong terminal layout leads to cables being fitted under tension – risk of confusion! |
| Base strip | B13 | Standard mounting foot on VW models. The B13 strip (also known as the B13 flange) ensures a firm fit in the battery tray with the factory clamping bracket. |
| Service life | 5–7 years (up to 10 years under optimised conditions) | Manufacturer's figure for proper use. T5 vehicles with an intact alternator and without constant short-distance driving reach an average of 6 years. Considerably more with purely long-distance operation. |
The values in the table show that with the T5, not only the capacity matters but above all the exact fit and terminal layout. A battery that is too large (H8 with 353 mm length) can collide with the lamp carrier structure on some T5 model years. That is why the H7 size (315 mm length) with 80 Ah is the best-selling compromise for T5 drivers who want both a reserve for comfort consumers and straightforward installation. All AGM batteries listed at Electronicx undergo a voltage check before dispatch and are supplied in a fully charged state – so the battery is ready for installation straight away.
Compatible model years and engine variants
The AGM battery can generally be used in all VW T5 model years from 2003 to 2015 – regardless of whether the vehicle was equipped with an AGM or a conventional battery from the factory. Retrofitting an AGM battery in an older T5 generally requires no adjustments to the alternator, as the voltage regulator adapts the voltage to the battery type by itself. Only on models with a start-stop system and battery management sensor system (BMS) on the negative terminal is coding of the new battery advisable after installation – we cover this in the installation section.
- Model years 2003–2009 (T5 pre-facelift): These early T5 models (type 7H/7J) usually do not yet have a start-stop system. From the factory they were fitted with classic lead-acid batteries of 70–80 Ah. An AGM retrofit is straightforward and noticeably increases reliability – especially in vans with many short journeys or frequent engine starts per day (parcel delivery, tradespeople). The AGM battery copes far better with the vibrations of the T5 chassis and delivers a consistently high cold cranking current all year round.
- Model years 2009–2015 (T5 GP facelift): With the model update, BlueMotion technology and start-stop systems made their way into the T5. These vehicles were already fitted with EFB or AGM batteries from the factory. Replacing them with a high-quality AGM battery with a capacity of at least 80 Ah is the direct replacement here and fully meets the requirements of the battery management system. Vehicles from this period without start-stop also benefit from the ability to upgrade to AGM.
- Engine variants: The AGM battery is compatible with all T5 engine versions: Diesel: 1.9 TDI (62–77 kW), 2.0 TDI (62–132 kW), 2.5 TDI (96–128 kW), 2.0 BiTDI (132 kW). For the five-cylinder 2.5 TDI, an AGM battery with at least 800 A CCA is recommended due to the higher compression and greater starter demand. Petrol: 2.0 (85 kW), 3.2 V6 (173 kW), 2.0 TSI (150 kW from 2011). The naturally aspirated V6 benefits in particular from the constant voltage level of the AGM battery during long periods of standing. BlueMotion / start-stop: These models use a battery management system (BMS) from the factory that expects the AGM battery type. Here, ideally choose an AGM battery with exactly the same capacity as the OE part, or, if there is increased consumer demand, one size larger (e.g. from 70 Ah to 80 Ah – then with coding).
The VW part numbers for AGM batteries in the T5 are, depending on capacity: 000 915 105 CC (60 Ah), 000 915 105 DE (68 Ah), 000 915 105 DG (75 Ah), 000 915 105 DH (80 Ah) and 000 915 105 DJ (92 Ah). We offer a detailed compatibility check for your T5 using the key number (HSK/TSN) before purchase; our support team will be happy to help you with the exact selection by phone or chat.
Installation instructions step by step
Safety note: Switch off the ignition, remove the remote key from the ignition lock and wait at least 10 minutes until all control units have shut down. Put on protective gloves and have a 13 mm open-end or ring spanner as well as a 10 mm socket for the terminal connections ready. Always lift the battery by the carrying handle – never by the terminal clamps.
- Open the bonnet and remove the battery cover: On the VW T5, the starter battery is located in the engine compartment at the front left, directly behind the left headlight. Remove the plastic cover, which is secured to the battery carrier with two clips. Carefully pull out the clips with a flat-head screwdriver.
- Take the remote key to a safe distance: Place the remote key at least 2 metres away from the vehicle – this prevents the electrical system from being unintentionally activated during the battery change and control units from being damaged.
- Disconnect the negative terminal first: First loosen the negative terminal clamp (black cable, "-" sign) with the 10 mm socket. Remove the clamp and bend it to the side so that it does not contact the negative terminal of the battery. This step prevents a short circuit when loosening the positive terminal clamp later.
- Disconnect the positive terminal: Loosen the positive terminal clamp (red cable, "+" sign) and place the cable to the side so that it does not come into contact with earth or the bodywork. On some T5 models with a BMS sensor, there is a small plug on the negative terminal – unlock and pull it off beforehand.
- Release the battery mounting: On the battery carrier foot you will find a 13 mm clamping bracket (sheet metal clamp with screw). Loosen the screw about 5–6 turns until the bracket disengages from the bottom rail (B13). Now carefully lift out the old battery by the carrying handle.
- Clean the battery compartment and check the terminal connections: Remove dirt or corrosion residue from the battery carrier with a wire brush. Check the terminal clamps for verdigris or cracks and clean them with terminal grease if necessary. Loose or damaged terminal clamps must be replaced before installing the new battery.
- Insert and align the new AGM battery: Place the new AGM battery into the carrier with the terminal side facing the centre of the vehicle and the bottom rail B13 facing downwards. Ensure it fits precisely: the lower rail of the battery engages in the carrier's receptacle. The positive terminal must be at the front right (terminal layout 0).
- Secure the clamping bracket: Slide the clamping bracket into the B13 bottom rail of the new battery and tighten the 13 mm screw hand-tight. Then tighten to a torque of approx. 8–10 Nm – not too tight, otherwise the battery case may be damaged.
- Connect the positive terminal first: First place the positive terminal clamp (red cable) onto the positive terminal and tighten the M6 nut to 5 Nm. Replace the positive terminal protective cap (red). On vehicles with a BMS sensor, now let the small plug on the negative terminal connection click into place.
- Connect the negative terminal and final check: Place the negative terminal clamp onto the negative terminal and tighten the screw to 5 Nm. Check all cables are secure, refit the cover with the clips. Switch on the ignition and attempt to start. On T5 with start-stop: the battery management learns the new battery automatically after about 8–10 engine starts. Coding is only necessary if you upgrade from a smaller to a larger capacity (e.g. 70 Ah → 80 Ah) – this process requires a diagnostic device and takes about 5 minutes.
Installation time: approx. 20–30 minutes. For T5 models with BMS and necessary coding, allow about 45 minutes. Important note: After changing the battery, on some T5 the electric windows and the ESP must be reset. To do this, simply open and close all windows completely once and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock – the system then initialises itself. Incorrect polarity can cause severe damage to the vehicle electronics – if in doubt, have the installation carried out by a specialist workshop.
Advantages of the AGM battery in the VW T5
- Start-stop compatible with 3 to 4 times the cycle durability: Conventional starter batteries last around 30,000 engine starts. An AGM battery can handle up to 120,000 start-stop cycles – that is three times the service life in vehicles with start-stop automatic (Source: Exide Technologies, product specification AGM, 2024).
- 850 A cold cranking current even at -18 °C: The AGM battery with 80 Ah delivers a full 800–850 amperes CCA. Even the high-compression 2.5 TDI with 128 kW starts reliably within 2 seconds in winter.
- Vibration-resistant thanks to glass-fibre fleece: The T5 Transporter chassis transmits more vibrations than a car. AGM technology binds the active mass in a glass-fibre-reinforced fleece and effectively prevents plate material from being shaken loose – a clear durability advantage over flooded batteries.
- Completely maintenance-free – no topping up with distilled water: The sealed system with internal gas recombination (VRLA technology) prevents water loss. You are spared the regular checking and topping up entirely, as is necessary with standard batteries.
- With a purely long-distance driving profile, even 8–10 years are realistic.
- Deep-discharge safe for camper conversions and auxiliary heaters: If the battery in the T5 California discharges overnight to 50 % through the auxiliary heater and cool box, the AGM battery takes this without any problem more than 400 times without loss of capacity. A standard battery would be finished after 50–80 such deep discharges.
- Secure fit thanks to the exact B13 base strip: No handling of adapter brackets or shims required: our AGM batteries listed for the VW T5 have the standard B13 base strip and can be fixed directly in the battery compartment with the OE clamp – vibration-proof and TÜV-compliant.
Frequently asked questions – AGM battery VW T5
- Which AGM battery fits the VW T5?
- The right AGM battery for your T5 depends on the year of manufacture and engine. For most T5 (2003–2015), a 12V AGM battery with 70–80 Ah, terminal layout 0 (positive terminal on the right) and B13 base strip is the right choice. For powerful diesel engines such as the 2.5 TDI, we recommend 92–95 Ah with at least 800 A CCA. Using the key number (HSK/TSN) from the vehicle registration document, we determine the exactly fitting battery in our shop in no time. Our best-selling model for the VW T5 is the Banner Running Bull AGM 80 Ah with 800 A CCA – it fits perfectly into the T5 battery carrier in size H7 (315×175×190 mm).
- How long does the AGM battery last in the VW T5?
- Under normal driving conditions – no constant short journeys, no months of standing, intact alternator – a branded AGM battery in the VW T5 achieves a long service life. Campers with a California T5 and dual-battery setup report long use in customer reviews, as the AGM battery copes very well with the cyclic loads from the cool box, auxiliary heater and LED interior lighting. The Electronicx warranty is 5 years on all AGM batteries.
- Do I need to code the battery after replacement?
- On T5 models without a start-stop system (model years 2003–2009 as well as many base models up to 2015), no coding is required. The electrical system learns the new charging voltage by itself. On T5 models with start-stop and a battery management sensor (BMS) on the negative terminal, we recommend coding if the new battery has a different capacity or technology from the OE part. An upgrade from 70 Ah to 80 Ah AGM should be registered via a diagnostic device (VCDS, ODIS) – this prevents undercharging or overcharging. The coding itself takes only 5 minutes and can be carried out by any independent workshop with access to VW diagnostics. A straight 1:1 replacement (e.g. AGM 80 Ah with a new AGM 80 Ah) generally requires no coding; the BMS recognises the new condition by itself after about 8–10 engine starts.
- What does an AGM battery for the VW T5 cost?
- The price depends on the capacity (Ah), cold cranking current (CCA) and technology of the battery. At Electronicx you will find suitable AGM batteries at fair prices – you can see the current price directly on each product page. If you do not install the battery yourself, the costs for installation and, if applicable, coding at a workshop are added; these are set by the workshop.
- Where do I find the battery in the VW T5?
- In the VW T5, the starter battery is located in the engine compartment at the front left – directly behind the left headlight under a black plastic cover. The position is identical on all T5 variants (panel van, pick-up, Multivan, Caravelle, California). Any second battery for camping equipment is located on California and some Multivan models under the left or right front seat. You reach it by folding the seat shell forward. Before every battery replacement, you should check both locations so that you replace the correct battery – the starter battery in the engine compartment is the one responsible for starting the engine and for the vehicle electrical system.
