Changing a car battery FAQ - step-by-step guide
As Germany's expert for car batteries with 15 years of experience and based in Cleebronn (Hindenburgstr. 37A, 74389), electronicx.de shows you step by step how to change a battery safely.
Basics
How do I recognise that my car battery needs changing?
The clearest signs are a sluggish engine start at temperatures below 10°C, a resting voltage below 12.3 volts or more than 5 years of service life. Modern wet batteries initially deliver 12.7 V; if the voltage drops to 12.0 V after 8 hours at rest, the capacity has fallen below 50 %. Also, if the battery needs jump-starting twice within a week or the warning light in the cockpit comes on, replace it immediately – otherwise you risk a breakdown in the last 3 kilometres.
What tools do I need for a battery change at electronicx?
For 90% of all vehicles, a 10 mm and a 13 mm open-ended or ring spanner, a tube of terminal grease (e.g. 15 g for €4.90) and a clean fibre cloth are sufficient. Many modern Euro 5/6 models also require a 6.3 mm flat-head screwdriver for the battery holder. Work with a maximum torque of 5 Nm on the terminal clamps to avoid over-tightening the threads. A memory saver (from €12.95) preserves radio stations and seat positions while you buffer the 12 V power supply via the OBD socket.
In what order do you disconnect and reconnect the car battery?
When removing, ALWAYS disconnect the negative (black, earth) first, then the positive (red). This prevents short circuits if the spanner touches the body – the earth is then already interrupted. When installing the new 12 V battery, strictly reverse the order: first connect the positive, then the negative. With 70 Ah batteries, inrush currents of up to 680 A (CCA) can flow, and a spanner applied incorrectly can spark in 0.2 seconds and damage the vehicle electronics. Tighten the terminal clamps to exactly 5 Nm.
What safety measures should be observed before changing the car battery?
Switch off the ignition for at least 10 minutes so that all control units enter sleep mode. Wear protective gloves and safety glasses – battery acid is 37% sulphuric acid, and just 3 drops on the skin can cause burns. Remove rings and watches: a short circuit between the positive terminal and the frame can cause third-degree burns within 2 seconds. For AGM batteries, the tilt angle is limited to 45°, otherwise electrolyte will leak. Stabilise the vehicle with a 2-tonne axle stand if you need to work under the seat.
When should the car battery be replaced preventively?
After 5 years of average service life, the cold cranking performance (CCA) of even premium flooded batteries drops below 420 A – however, many engines with 1.6–2.0 litre displacement require at least 540 A at -18°C. A load test with a 100 A tester shows the actual condition: if the voltage falls below 9.6 V within 10 seconds, order a new battery immediately on +49 7135 7194106.
How do I dispose of the old starter battery properly?
Starter batteries contain 98% recyclable materials – lead, sulphuric acid, polypropylene. Hand in the old battery free of charge at any recycling centre or use the statutory deposit return when buying a battery. electronicx.de takes back old batteries as part of the €10 deposit system; you will receive a confirmation for the environmental bonus. Always transport the old battery upright and disconnected to avoid short circuits.
Does a battery change at the garage cost more than 80 euros?
Yes, the pure installation time is often charged at 0.3–0.5 hours at €120–160, i.e. €36–80. Added to this are environmentally sound disposal (approx. €3.90) and possibly registration fees for start-stop systems (€30–70). Overall, garage costs are between €89 and €190 – excluding the new battery. Our customers save an average of €45–120 by changing it themselves and even receive telephone support during installation via our hotline +49 7135 7194106.
How do I determine the correct battery size for my vehicle model?
The first 4 digits of the type key (e.g. 2.1) are shown in the vehicle registration document. Enter these in our battery finder on electronicx.de or select make, model and year of manufacture to get the matching dimensions directly, e.g. 278 x 175 x 190 mm (LxWxH) for many compact cars. The capacity must be between 44 Ah and 110 Ah, the cold cranking performance between 440 A and 800 A CCA.
Do I need to register or code the new car battery after installation?
For 70% of models without start-stop, a simple swap is sufficient. However, vehicles with a battery management system (BMS) from 2012 onwards require registration via an OBD diagnostic device (from €39.95). The on-board computer then expects the nominal capacity, e.g. 80 Ah, and the type (AGM / EFB). Without coding, the alternator operates with old parameters and the new battery only achieves 100–150 charge cycles instead of 350–500. electronicx.de recommends booking the coding service for a one-off €19.90 at partner garages in Cleebronn by appointment.
What mistakes do 90% of DIY enthusiasts make during their first battery change?
The most common mistake is loosening the positive terminal first – this creates a short circuit if the tool touches the body. When tightening the terminal clamps, many over-tighten the M6 nut with more than 7 Nm, which can pull the terminal out of the housing. Equally critical: omitting terminal grease leads to corrosion and a voltage drop of 0.4 V after 3–4 months. A third forget to vent the separate battery box, which can lead to overpressure with a risk of explosion during gassing. Use our illustrated installation instructions.
Technical & specifications
What do the figures 70 Ah and 680 A (CCA) on a starter battery mean?
70 Ah (ampere-hours) indicates the amount of stored charge – the battery delivers 3.5 A for 20 hours before the voltage drops to 10.5 V. 680 A CCA (cold cranking current according to EN standard) means that at -18°C it can deliver 680 A for 30 seconds without dropping below 7.2 V. For a 2-litre diesel, at least 650 A CCA is required; at 70 Ah the typical service life is 4-6 years with around 300 charge cycles. electronicx.de lists both values for every battery – from 44 Ah / 440 A to 110 Ah / 850 A.
What resting voltage should a new 12V car battery have?
Directly after charging or after a 45-minute drive, the voltage is 12.6 V to 12.8 V. After 8-10 hours at rest without consumers, the value for a fully charged battery is 12.5-12.7 V. If it falls below 12.3 V, the battery is only 50% charged and requires a 14.4 V charger with at least 5 A charging current.
Can I install an 80 Ah battery even though 60 Ah was previously specified?
Yes, as long as the physical dimensions (e.g. 278 x 175 x 190 mm) fit in the compartment and the CCA at least meets the series specification. An 80 Ah battery offers 33% more reserve capacity at the same voltage of 12 V, which relieves the alternator and increases cycle stability to 400 instead of 300 discharge cycles. Note: With start-stop systems, the battery management system must be coded to the higher capacity, otherwise only 60% of the extra is used. Use our battery finder to check compatibility in 15 seconds.
What are the typical battery dimensions for compact cars, mid-range and SUV?
Compact cars (e.g. Polo) usually require size 063 (207 x 175 x 175 mm) with 42-52 Ah. Mid-range (Golf, 3 Series) uses 027 (242 x 175 x 190 mm) with 60-74 Ah and 540-680 A CCA. Larger diesels and SUVs require the 019 variant (306 x 173 x 222 mm) with 80-100 Ah and 740-850 A CCA. Our range includes 22 different sizes – from small (187 x 127 x 227 mm) for microcars to Varta Silver with 354 mm length for upper-class hybrids. 99.4% of ordered batteries fit straight away thanks to exact dimensions.
Can an older vehicle without start-stop handle a high-quality AGM battery?
Technically yes, the 12 V AGM delivers 680-800 A CCA and operates at 14.4-14.8 V charging voltage, which 95% of older alternators achieve. It offers 400-500 charge cycles instead of 200 for flooded batteries and twice the vibration resistance (acceleration up to 4 g). Without start-stop control, however, the AGM ages faster because the charging characteristic is not optimal – service life drops from 7 to about 4-5 years. At our partner in Cleebronn, you can have it checked for €29.90 whether an external AGM charge controller can be fitted ex works.
How do you recognise a deeply discharged battery and how do you rescue it?
A deeply discharged lead-acid battery shows a resting voltage below 10.5 V. Sulphation of the plates begins after just 24 hours below 11.6 V – after 7 days, capacity is irreversibly reduced by at least 40%. With an IU charger (max. 5 A) and 14.8 V charging voltage, you can regenerate 60% of all deeply discharged AGM batteries within 16-20 hours; simple flooded batteries need up to 36 hours. electronicx.de recommends the CTEK MXS 5.0 (from €74.90) for this. If capacity after recharging falls below 50% of the nominal value, only a new purchase from €59.90 is worthwhile.
How many charge and discharge cycles does a modern starter battery manage?
Conventional calcium batteries achieve 180-220 cycles at 50% depth of discharge – equivalent to a car life of 4-5 years with daily use. EFB batteries (Enhanced Flooded) increase this to 250-300 cycles, AGM types to 350-500 cycles. In start-stop operation with 8-12 engine stops per 10 km, this can be up to 60,000 partial charge cycles per year, which is why only EFB or AGM with at least 60 Ah is permitted here.
What capacity in Ah should my diesel battery have at minimum?
A 2.0-litre turbo diesel (140 hp) requires a cold cranking current of 580-640 A at -10°C, which a 70 Ah battery typically delivers. 60 Ah may suffice in the short term but leads to 20% shorter service life because the alternator goes deeper into discharge daily. For 3.0-litre 6-cylinder, we recommend 80-95 Ah with 760-850 A CCA. At electronicx.de, the 77 Ah EFB battery costs €79.90, the 80 Ah AGM €109.90.
What cold cranking current (CCA) is really necessary at –18°C?
The rule of thumb: displacement in litres x 300 gives the minimum CCA. A 1.4-litre petrol therefore needs 420 A, a 2.0-litre diesel 600 A. Modern engines with direct injection require an additional 15-20% higher values, as the high-pressure pump briefly draws up to 120 A. A 60 Ah battery with 540 A CCA (EN) starts the 1.6 TDI even at –20°C in 2.3 seconds. electronicx combination offers show suitable CCA values for 1,900 vehicle models – from 440 A for small cars to 850 A for heavy SUVs.
What distinguishes EFB from AGM batteries and which type costs more?
EFB (Enhanced Flooded) is a further development of the classic flooded battery with polyester fleece on the plates, costs from €69.90 and tolerates 250-300 cycles. AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) binds the acid in glass fleece, is leak-proof and designed for the highest loads – it tolerates 350-500 cycles and costs from €99.90. For purely city vehicles with long standing times, electronicx.de recommends AGM, as it charges faster at 14.8 V and is 2-3 dB quieter in the interior.
