Varta batteries
Varta batteries are among the most sought-after and reliable sources of energy in the automotive sector. Whether for modern start-stop systems, classic vehicles without start-stop or heavy commercial vehicles – Varta offers the right high-performance battery for almost every application. As an official distribution partner of the Varta brand, Electronicx GmbH from Cleebronn (Baden-Württemberg) carries a comprehensive range of original Varta batteries.
What are Varta batteries and what technologies are behind them?
Varta is one of the most traditional battery brands in Europe. The company develops and manufactures starter batteries that are installed as original equipment in many vehicles or serve as high-quality replacements. The core of all car starter batteries is lead-acid technology, which is divided into three main categories depending on the design and requirement:
- Conventional flooded batteries (SLI): Standard technology for vehicles without a start-stop system, reliable and inexpensive, regular maintenance (water level) required on some models.
- EFB batteries (Enhanced Flooded Battery): Further development of the flooded battery with higher cycle stability and improved charge acceptance. Ideal for vehicles with simple start-stop systems and high energy demand without brake energy recuperation.
- AGM batteries (Absorbent Glass Mat): The highest performance class. The electrolyte is bound in a glass-fibre mat, which makes the battery leak-proof, extremely vibration-resistant and particularly cycle-stable. AGM batteries are specified for modern start-stop vehicles with recuperation and high electrical load.
Varta uses a precise plate technology, high-purity lead alloys and the patented PowerFrame® grid structure across all series. This leads to lower self-discharge, longer service life and impressive cold cranking currents (CCA) even in severe frost.

Understanding the technical specifications of Varta batteries
To select the right Varta battery, it is worth taking a look at the most important technical details:
- Capacity (Ah): Indicates how much current the battery can deliver over 20 hours until the voltage drops to 10.5 V. A 70 Ah battery can therefore provide, for example, 3.5 A for 20 hours.
- Cold cranking current (CCA, EN): The maximum current the battery can deliver at -18 °C for 10 seconds without dropping below 7.5 V. A high CCA value ensures reliable starting in winter. Varta AGM batteries achieve EN values of up to 900 A.
- Case sizes (e.g. H6, H7, H8, L2): Uniform standards for length, width and height as well as terminal arrangement (0 = positive terminal on the right). Varta uses the European type designations, which are also printed on the battery label.
- Charging programme: AGM batteries require a final charging voltage of max. 14.4–14.8 V, EFB up to 14.8 V and conventional flooded batteries 14.4–14.7 V. Modern chargers with an AGM/EFB mode are recommended.
- Internal resistance: Low internal resistances (often below 3 milliohms for AGM) enable high current draw and efficient charging by the alternator.

How to find the right Varta battery for your vehicle
So that your new Varta battery fits perfectly and works reliably, you should go through these steps:
- Check the registration certificate: Note down the vehicle type, engine variant and year of manufacture. The exact specification (e.g. 12 V 70 Ah 720 A) is often stated in the service booklet or on the old battery.
- Determine start-stop status: Does your car have start-stop? If it has automatic engine shut-off, an EFB or AGM battery is mandatory. Vehicles with brake energy recuperation (mild hybrid) almost always require AGM.
- Measure the battery compartment: The length, width and height of the old battery, the position of the positive terminal (right = terminal layout 0) and the type of connection (clamp or angle) are decisive.
- Know the car's power requirements: Modern diesel vehicles with electric heating, seat heating and infotainment often require a battery with high capacity (> 80 Ah) and high CCA.
- Use our vehicle search: On our website, simply select the make, model and engine, and the matching Varta battery set will be displayed immediately.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about Varta batteries
Which Varta battery is the right one for my car?
That depends on your vehicle type, engine size and equipment. It is best to use our online vehicle search: enter the make, model and engine, and you will receive exactly the right Varta battery. You can also identify the correct battery by the dimensions and the labelling (e.g. H6, H7) of your old battery.
What do the designations on Varta batteries mean (e.g. F21, H3, AGM)?
The letter-number combination indicates the case size and terminal layout. For example, “F21” stands for a narrow battery with a specification for Asian vehicles, while “H3”, “H6”, “H7” are common European sizes. The specification “AGM” or “EFB” describes the technology that is relevant for start-stop vehicles.
Are all Varta batteries maintenance-free?
The models in the Silver Dynamic AGM, Silver Dynamic EFB and Blue Dynamic series are completely maintenance-free (VRLA). You do not need to top up with water. Some older or entry-level models in the Black Dynamic line, on the other hand, may have removable caps and should be topped up with distilled water from time to time. In the everyday life of most car drivers, however, a maintenance-free Varta battery is the norm anyway.
How long does a Varta car battery last on average?
The service life of a Varta battery is typically 4 to 6 years; under favourable conditions (moderate climate, regular use), 7–8 years are also possible. The decisive factors are the number of cold starts, the distances driven (short journeys put more strain on the battery) and correct charging by the alternator. AGM batteries often have a higher expected service life than conventional batteries.
What is the difference between Varta Silver Dynamic and Blue Dynamic?
The Silver Dynamic series is the premium line with improved plate technology, higher cold start currents and – in the case of AGM/EFB – significantly higher cycle stability. Blue Dynamic is the solid mid-range for conventional vehicles without start-stop. Silver Dynamic is particularly suitable for cars with additional electrical load and ambitious drivers, while Blue Dynamic offers excellent value for money for standard requirements.
Can I simply replace an old conventional battery with a Varta AGM?
In principle yes, provided the dimensions and terminal layout match. However, an AGM upgrade only makes sense if your vehicle has start-stop with recuperation or a very high electrical load. Installing an AGM in a simple vehicle can even cause the battery to be overcharged, as the battery management system (BMS) in many modern cars must recognise the battery type. Therefore, check the manufacturer's specifications first. In vehicles without a BMS, the change is unproblematic.
How do I dispose of an old Varta battery correctly?
Old batteries must not be put in household waste. You can return your old starter battery free of charge at municipal recycling centres or at retailers – this is required by law.
How quickly will my Varta battery be delivered and what does shipping cost?
Within Germany, shipping by DHL is completely free for you. Orders placed by 2 p.m. usually leave our warehouse the same day. The battery is securely packed and delivered, so transport damage is virtually excluded.
