AGM Batteries

More about AGM Batteries

AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat. The electrolyte is bound in a glass fibre mat. The battery is sealed, maintenance-free, leak-proof and vibration-resistant. It handles high currents and frequent charge cycles better than a classic flooded battery. These are lead batteries. The category includes AGM batteries for cars with start-stop, motorhomes, boats and solar. Below you will find a selection guide with the most important criteria.

Briefly answered: AGM battery

What is an AGM battery?

AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat. The electrolyte is bound in a glass fibre mat. The battery is sealed, maintenance-free, leak-proof and vibration-resistant. It handles high currents and frequent charge cycles better than a classic flooded battery. It is a lead battery.

Which cars is an AGM battery suitable for?

Cars with an automatic start-stop system and many consumers often have an AGM or EFB battery from the factory. If an AGM battery was installed from the factory, it is replaced with an AGM battery again. An AGM battery can also fit as a replacement for a flooded battery if the dimensions, polarity and capacity match and the vehicle allows it.

Which AGM battery fits my car?

First check the capacity in Ah of the old battery. The new battery should have at least the same capacity. Pay attention to the design and dimensions, which must fit in the battery box, as well as the polarity. The cold cranking current should be at least equal to the original. Compare reference numbers.

Does a new AGM battery need to be registered?

In vehicles with battery management, the new battery must be registered or learned in the control unit on some manufacturers. The type and capacity are stored in the process. Whether this is necessary for your vehicle depends on the manufacturer. The vehicle manual or a specialist workshop provides information on this.

Can I install an AGM battery instead of a flooded battery?

An AGM battery can fit as a replacement for a flooded battery if the dimensions, polarity and capacity match and the vehicle allows it. If an AGM battery was installed from the factory, replace it with an AGM battery again and not with a flooded battery. Check the information in the vehicle manual.

How do I charge an AGM battery?

AGM batteries are maintenance-free and handle frequent charge cycles better than flooded batteries. Use a charger with an AGM characteristic. The maximum charging voltage of the Electronicx AGM supply batteries is 14.4 V. Observe the information from the charger manufacturer and the vehicle manual.

How to choose the right AGM battery

The selection is made in five steps. First check the old battery and the installation conditions.

  1. Choose a capacity in Ah at least equal to the old battery. The figure is on the battery label or in the vehicle manual.
  2. The design and dimensions (L × W × H) must fit in the battery box. Note the bottom bar B13.
  3. Check the polarity: positive terminal on the right or left. Looking at the battery, terminals facing you.
  4. Choose a cold cranking current (A, EN) at least equal to the original.
  5. Compare reference numbers or OE numbers of the old battery on the product page.

In vehicles with battery management, the new battery must be registered in the control unit depending on the manufacturer. Ask in the vehicle manual or at a specialist workshop.

AGM batteries from Electronicx

AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat: the electrolyte is absorbed in a glass fibre mat. The battery is sealed, maintenance-free and leak-proof. In this category you will find all AGM batteries of our own brand Electronicx:

  • Starter batteries for cars: 12 V, 60 to 105 Ah, for vehicles with and without start-stop system.
  • Motorcycle batteries: 6 V and 12 V, for motorcycles, scooters, quads and mopeds.
  • Leisure batteries: 12 V, 80 to 140 Ah, for motorhomes, caravans, boats and solar systems, as Caravan, Marine, Mobile and Solar Edition.
  • Backup battery: 12 V, 12 Ah, as a backup battery for the vehicle electrical system. The vehicles it is intended for are listed in the item description.
  • Lawn tractor: U1 and U1R type, 12 V, 30 Ah.

Sizes of the AGM leisure batteries

Capacity Dimensions (L × W × H)
80 Ah 242 × 175 × 190 mm
100 Ah 278 × 175 × 190 mm
110 Ah 315 × 175 × 190 mm
120 Ah 353 × 175 × 190 mm
140 Ah 393 × 175 × 190 mm

The dimensions apply to all editions of the same capacity.

AGM, GEL or LiFePO4?

  • AGM: delivers high currents and is suitable both as a starter battery and as a leisure battery. For a long service life it should not be deeply discharged on a regular basis.
  • GEL: copes well with slow, deep discharge and is mainly intended as a leisure battery. For high starting currents in a car, AGM is the better choice.
  • LiFePO4: lighter than lead batteries of the same capacity and can be discharged more deeply. Charger, DC-DC charger and solar controller need a LiFePO4 charging profile.

How to find the right battery

  • By vehicle: Use the vehicle search on this page to select make, model and year. For cars you can also enter the numbers from the German vehicle registration certificate (HSN and TSN).
  • By your old battery: In the battery finder on this page you can search by the type or battery number of your old battery, by dimensions and by polarity.
  • Dimensions: Length, width and height must fit the battery holder or battery compartment. The dimensions are given for every item.
  • Positive terminal: Look at the battery from the front, with the terminals at the front: positive terminal on the right means layout 0, positive terminal on the left means layout 1. With reversed polarity the cables usually do not reach.
  • Capacity (Ah): For starter batteries, choose at least the capacity of the old battery. For leisure batteries, the capacity depends on your daily consumption.
  • Cold cranking current (CCA): The value in A (EN) should be at least as high as that of the old battery.

Charging correctly

Set your charger, DC-DC charger and solar controller to the AGM charging profile. The permissible charging voltage is given in the item description.

Shipping, statutory warranty and old batteries

Orders received by 14:00 on working days are shipped the same day. Statutory warranty rights apply.

Old batteries must not be disposed of with household waste. You can return them free of charge at municipal collection points or to retailers. In Germany, the Battery Act Implementation Law (BattDG) requires a deposit of EUR 7.50 including VAT on starter batteries if no old battery is returned at the time of purchase. Further information is available in the battery law notices at the bottom of this page.
