AGM Battery for Audi RS3 – Optimum Starting Power & Longevity | Electronicx
AGM Battery for Audi RS3 - Exact-fit high performance for the compact sports car
The Audi RS3 – whether as Sportback or Saloon – combines confident everyday usability with brutal performance. Its 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder engine delivers up to 400 PS and places the highest demands on the entire vehicle – especially on the power supply. A conventional starter battery is out of place here. Audi already fits the cycle-resistant AGM technology (Absorbent Glass Mat) at the factory, and replacement should only be carried out with an equivalent AGM battery.
Why is that? The RS3 is packed with high-end electronics. The standard start-stop system demands dozens of engine starts from the battery on every journey without the voltage collapsing. The adaptive suspension, the electromechanical power steering, the Audi virtual cockpit plus, the powerful MMI navigation, the Bang & Olufsen premium sound system with over 680 watts and the entire LED lighting technology draw permanently high currents. Add to this comfort consumers such as seat heating, automatic climate control and numerous driver assistance systems. All of this creates a highly dynamic electrical system that brings conventional flooded batteries to their knees within a few months.
The battery installation location varies depending on the generation. In the Audi RS3 8V (2015–2020), the battery is located in the engine compartment, on the left in front of the bulkhead. In the current RS3 8Y (from 2021), it moved to the boot, under the load floor, for better weight distribution. There it is better protected from extreme temperature fluctuations, but must be correctly registered by the vehicle electronics when replaced. On the OE side, Audi often fitted the Varta Silver Dynamic AGM (e.g. 7P0915105A) or Moll batteries with 70-80 Ah and 760-800 A cold cranking current. A high-quality AGM battery from our range at Electronicx meets these specifications exactly, whether you use your RS3 as a daily driver or as a track tool with frequent stop-and-go.
Technical data - AGM battery for Audi RS3 (8V and 8Y)
The following table shows the key specifications of a type-compliant AGM battery for all variants of the Audi RS3. The values are based on Audi's OE specifications and the specifications of leading manufacturers such as Varta and Banner.
| Specification | Value | Significance for the RS3 |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 12 Volt | Standard electrical system of the vehicle. AGM delivers constant voltage even under high load. |
| Capacity (Ah) | 70 - 80 Ah (depending on model year/engine code) | Ensures that the start-stop system and the quiescent current of the extensive peripherals are supplied for a long time even when the engine is switched off. |
| Cold cranking current (CCA) | 760 A (EN) to 800 A (EN) | The 2.5 TFSI demands enormous currents in cold conditions and with high compression. The AGM delivers them reliably for the characterful sound start. |
| Dimensions (LxWxH in mm) | 278 x 175 x 190 (H7/ L4), or 315 x 175 x 190 (H8/ L5, depending on model year) | Decisive for the exact fit in the original battery box/bracket in the engine compartment (8V) or boot well (8Y). |
| Pole arrangement | Positive terminal right (0), negative terminal left | The OE cable lengths and cross-sections are designed exactly for this, no mechanical strain on the terminals. |
| Base strip | B13 (H7) or B13 (H8) | Fixes the battery in a form-fitting manner with the standard hold-down plate. |
| Service life | 5-7 years, up to 6x the cycle resistance of a flooded battery | In everyday RS3 use with many city journeys, the AGM lasts significantly longer than EFB or standard batteries thanks to its closed glass fleece system and efficient recombination. |
The capacity rating is relevant in practice. A 70 Ah model covers the needs of most 8V models up to around 2020. For the new 8Y with the further refined 2.5 TFSI (310 kW/420 Nm) and extended infotainment, we often recommend the 80 Ah variant. It provides reserves for short journeys and use of the auxiliary heater. The cold cranking current of at least 760 A ensures that the high-compression five-cylinder starts immediately even after a cold winter night, before the high-pressure injection and variable valve timing settle the running comfortably. When buying, pay particular attention to uncompromising fit: +/- 3 mm in length can make the difference as to whether the insulating cover closes and the bracket grips. Our support team will help you identify the exact battery using your chassis number.
Compatible model years and engine variants of the Audi RS3
The AGM battery is the only technically sensible choice for all Audi RS3 variants. Both the first generation of the sporty compact car and the current second edition rely on this technology from the factory. Compatibility depends not only on the model year but also on product improvements within a model generation.
The Audi RS3 was never available as a diesel or plug-in hybrid. The only engine is the legendary 2.5-litre inline five-cylinder turbo (EA855 evo). The following list therefore focuses on the pure petrol variants and the changes to the electrical system and battery management associated with generation changes.
- Model years 2015–2016 (8V pre-facelift): The first RS3 generation (type 8V, 270 kW/367 PS) generally used an AGM with 70 Ah and 760 A CCA. Located in the engine bay. Maintenance-free operation, but the battery control unit may require an update if replaced with a different capacity.
- Model years 2017–2020 (8V facelift): Due to the power increase to 294 kW (400 PS) and optional extras such as the RS sports exhaust system with enhanced flap control, AGM remained the technology, but often with 75 Ah or 80 Ah capacity (depending on the equipment list). Coding a new battery in the CAN bus became mandatory from model year 2019.
- Model years 2021–present (8Y): The latest generation (saloon and Sportback, 310 kW/420 Nm) moved the battery to the boot. Here Audi consistently uses the high-performance H7 or H8 AGM with 80 Ah and 800 A CCA. The highly developed energy management (MHEV components are not fitted, but coasting freewheel start-stop is) requires meticulous entry of capacity and serial number when registering a new battery. A BEM-codable AGM from our brand partnerships (e.g. Banner Running Bull AGM) is mandatory here.
- Engine variants: Exclusively 2.5 TFSI (EA855). All variants are start-stop capable from the factory and therefore absolutely require an AGM. It covers the entire PSA energy spectrum of the five-cylinder.
Installation guide step by step – AGM battery in the Audi RS3
Safety note: Switch off the ignition completely and wait 10 minutes until all control units have entered sleep mode. Secure the vehicle against rolling away, apply the handbrake. Use only tools with insulated handles and wear gloves to protect the boot interior (if the battery is fitted there). Place all remote keys outside the vehicle's range to avoid unintentionally waking the electronics.
- Prepare tools and secure the electrical system: You will need a 10 mm and 13 mm open-end or ring spanner (or ratchet), a suitable terminal puller, battery terminal grease, an open-ended ratchet for heavy brackets, possibly Torx T25/T30 for covers, and the memory saver device if you want to retain coding data. Open the bonnet and driver's door, but lock all doors manually from the inside to minimise repeated wake-up procedures (this applies in particular to the 8Y).
- Gain access to the battery (8V – engine bay): Remove the front air guide cover above the radiator grille by carefully levering out the four expansion rivets. Then pull off the rubber lip above the water box. The battery insulating cover can be removed after releasing the side snap fasteners. The negative terminal is on the left.
- Gain access to the battery (8Y – boot): Lift up the boot floor panel and remove the tool tray and the cover beneath it. Release the three fastening clips of the spare wheel well support. Beneath this, the battery cover sits transversely in the vehicle. Detach the holder of the insulating box (the battery).
- Removing the negative terminal (observe the order!): Fold back the plastic cover on the negative terminal. Loosen the 10mm nut, pull the earth cable (negative) off the terminal first and place it to one side so that it cannot spring back. This prevents short circuits when loosening the positive terminal.
- Removing the positive terminal and the bracket: Lift up the red cover on the positive terminal and loosen the 10mm nut. Pull off the thick starter cable. Now loosen the 13mm bolt of the floor bracket on the front or rear sill (depending on the design). Remove the flat hold-down clamp completely.
- Removing the old battery: Lift the old AGM battery out vertically using the integrated carrying handle or a suitable lifting aid. 70-80 Ah models weigh over 20 kg – proceed ergonomically to protect your back and avoid damaging the battery tray.
- Fitting the new AGM battery: Place the new battery in the recess. Make sure that the floor strip engages perfectly in the groove. Refit the hold-down clamp and tighten the 13mm bolt hand-tight (specific tightening torque approx. 6-8 Nm, not too tight, so as not to distort the casing).
- Fitting the terminals (positive first, then negative): First place the positive starter cable on the positive terminal, screw the nut on by hand and tighten it. Pull the red protective cap over it. Then connect the earth cable to the negative terminal and tighten it. The quiet sparking noise when connecting the earth cable indicates the normal charging current to the consumers.
- Coding / registering the battery (do not skip!): A purely mechanical installation is not enough. On all Audi RS3 (8V from MY 2017, 8Y throughout the entire production run) you must register the new energy management via an OBD2 diagnostic device (e.g. VCDS, OBDeleven, professional Launch system). You change the battery serial number (simply alter one digit) and enter the manufacturer's specification as well as the capacity in Ah. Only in this way does the BEM adapt the charging characteristic and start-stop is active again.
- Finishing work and function test: Close all covers in reverse order. Start the RS3 while stationary. If the electric seat adjustment, all window regulators and the panoramic roof can be fully closed without a hash warning (hold the UHU function briefly), the basic settings are stored. Turn the steering once completely from left to right lock; the warning lamp for the steering angle sensor goes out. The system is optimally set to the new battery.
Duration: approx. 20 minutes (8V) to 30 minutes (8Y) plus the time for OBD coding. Important note: On a start-stop vehicle such as the RS3, the investment in proper registration is not optional. Without updating the capacity data, the system over- or undercharges the battery, which leads to premature wear and sporadic failures of the start-stop automatic function.
Advantages of the AGM battery specifically in the Audi RS3
- Up to 800 A provide a powerful starting feel: With a cold cranking current of 760 to 800 amperes, the AGM delivers the immense power reserve for the high-compression 2.5 TFSI even at very low sub-zero temperatures – without noticeable rattling from the starter.
- Recombination technology: 99% of the gases produced in the AGM glass fleece are converted back into water. No electrolyte loss, no leaking acid – suitable for a high-performance sports model that often remains in the fleet unchanged for years.
- Ideal for permanent peak loads: The adaptive damping control Audi magnetic ride, the performance chassis as well as the steering power assistance systems that briefly draw up to 200 amperes can strongly polarise a conventional battery – the AGM remains stable and linear, no voltage drops under load.
- Vibration-resistant up to 10G: In the engine compartment (8V) or boot (8Y), the battery is exposed to extreme vibrations and centrifugal forces – the tightly pressed glass fibre mats enclose the plates “block-tight”, plate short circuits are practically impossible, which is crucial for the RS3 on poor roads and on the racetrack.
- Up to 4 times the cycle stability compared to EFB: In the RS3-typical city traffic with 15-25 engine starts per 10 km, the AGM easily reaches 360,000 cycles. The AGM remains the best partner of the permanently excited linear network system without the start-stop readiness failing.
- No maintenance effort, no water topping up: The maintenance-free construction allows you to have no additional effort for the energy supply for years. Instead, plan the next Nordschleife lap with less worry – the AGM sits securely and works silently.
- Perfect for retrofitted consumers: Whether it's a dashcam in parking mode, additional amplifiers in the boot or the RS sports seats with memory package – the deep-discharge-resistant AGM always provides enough reserve without immediately reaching critical charge levels.
- Originally specified by Audi: Audi itself uses exclusively AGM as original equipment in the RS3. Switching to an equivalent Electronicx AGM with BEM code ensures seamless integration into the RS3's intelligent charging electronics – the battery is treated as an “original part”.
Frequently asked questions about the AGM battery for Audi RS3
- Which AGM battery fits exactly in the Audi RS3?
- For the RS3 8V (model years 2015–2020) with engine bay installation, the H7 (70-75 Ah) or H8 (80 Ah) AGM is usually specified. The RS3 8Y from 2021 in the boot almost exclusively requires the 80 Ah H8 AGM with B13 base strip and 800 A CCA. However, be sure to check the imprint on your old battery or order using the key number from our support, as with optional equipment such as auxiliary heating a stronger variant (e.g. Banner Running Bull AGM 595 20) may be necessary.
- How long does the AGM battery last in typical RS3 everyday use?
- The average service life is 5-7 years. With daily short journeys under 5 km, constantly active start-stop and extreme heat/cold in the engine bay, it can drop to 4 years. In the cooler boot of the 8Y and with regular longer journeys over 50 km, 8 years is also realistic.
- Do I need to code / register the battery after replacement?
- Yes, absolutely. In all RS3 with start-stop system (which is all model years), the battery energy management (BEM) registers the new battery. You must at least change the 10- or 11-digit serial number in a specific block (e.g. via VCDS in control unit 19 – CAN gateway under adaptation). Only then does the BEM reset the ageing counters and adapt the charging curve to the internal resistance of the unknown AGM. Without coding, overcharging or permanent deactivation of the start-stop function may occur.
- What does a high-quality AGM battery for the RS3 cost compared to a franchised workshop?
- In the Electronicx shop you can get perfectly fitting AGM batteries for the RS3 from 169.00 EUR (70 Ah) to approx. 205.00 EUR (80 Ah, H8). At Audi franchised workshops, the original replacement battery is often charged at 340-450 EUR, installation and coding quickly over 550 EUR. With us you save over 40 percent with identical specification and also receive a battery with BEM coding capability.
- Do I need to relearn the window regulators and steering after changing the battery?
- Yes. After disconnecting the battery, the end stops of the window regulators and the steering angle sensor are no longer learned. Have all windows individually fully lowered and raised again. Then slowly turn the steering wheel fully to the left and then fully to the right to the stop (the LED usually goes out). The power steering works correctly again immediately. This procedure takes less than 3 minutes.
- Where do I find the battery in the Audi RS3 8Y with B&O sound?
- The battery is in the boot, in a recessed well under the ventilation grille, behind the rear seat backrest. You must remove the double boot floor and the tool compartment in front of the underground subwoofers of the Bang & Olufsen system. The battery itself is covered with a fabric insulating hood. Note: The vent hose in the positive terminal area must be correctly reconnected during the new installation, as the battery is located in the interior and gas must be vented to the outside.
