AGM Battery for Ford Puma – Tailored energy for start-stop and mild hybrid
The Ford Puma relies on highly efficient onboard electronics from the factory, with a standard start-stop system, extensive comfort sensors and, in many variants, a 48-volt mild hybrid system (MHEV). To reliably supply this technology with energy, the vehicle requires a particularly powerful and cycle-resistant 12-volt battery. The AGM battery (Absorbent Glass Mat) is the optimal choice here – it provides the necessary voltage stability even with frequent engine stops, copes with high charge and discharge cycles through recuperation and always ensures flawless operation of the start-stop automatic system.
In the Ford Puma, the main battery is located in the engine compartment – front right (passenger side) behind the plastic cover. From the factory, Ford often installs an EFB battery depending on the trim level and engine variant, and in higher-grade versions or on customer request, an AGM battery. Vehicles with mild hybrid technology (1.0 EcoBoost Hybrid) or extensive comfort equipment (SYNC 3 / SYNC 4, heated seats, keyless go) particularly benefit from an upgrade to AGM. The factory-installed batteries – for example from Varta or Banner – have capacities between 60 and 70 Ah and cold start currents around 650 to 700 A (EN). A high-quality AGM battery also protects the sensitive onboard power management (BMS) from voltage drops and expensive consequential damage; how long it lasts depends on use, charging, temperature and care.
At Electronicx, you can find the exactly fitting AGM battery for your Ford Puma in just a few clicks – including detailed advice, compatibility assurance and fast delivery.
Technical data – AGM battery for Ford Puma
The AGM battery ideally matched to the requirements of the Ford Puma combines high capacity, extreme cold start performance and compact dimensions that fit perfectly into the existing battery compartment in the engine bay. The following table shows the relevant specifications that a replacement battery must meet for reliable operation.
| Specification | Value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 12 V | Standard onboard voltage; all consumers in the Puma are designed for 12 V |
| Capacity (Ah) | 60–70 Ah (typ. 70 Ah) | Sufficient energy reserve for start-stop phases, comfort electronics and standing times; more capacity increases cycle resistance |
| Cold start current (CCA) | 680 A (EN/SAE) | Provides the necessary power for reliable engine starting of the EcoBoost engine even at sub-zero temperatures |
| Dimensions (L×W×H) | 278 × 175 × 190 mm | Exact size for the standard battery tray; fits without modifications – no slipping, secure fixing |
| Pole arrangement | Positive terminal right, negative terminal left (view of the terminals) | Corresponds to the original Ford wiring; prevents polarity errors and ensures short-circuit protection |
| Base strip | B13 (base hold-down) | Standardised mounting with lower retaining lug; compatible with the factory clamp in the Puma |
| Lifespan | 5–7 years | Thanks to valve-regulated AGM technology and high vibration tolerance, significantly more durable than conventional EFB versions |
For the Ford Puma, the cold start current is particularly important, as the modern EcoBoost three-cylinder engines require an energy-rich starter even at low temperatures. The 60–70 Ah capacity offers enough reserve to reliably operate the start-stop system even in dense city traffic while optimally supporting the 48-volt MHEV system during recuperation. The dimensions 278×175×190 mm correspond to the standard size H5 (LN2) and can be easily accommodated in the Puma's mounting compartment.
Compatible model years and engine variants
The AGM battery described here is suitable for all Ford Puma model years from September 2019 to today – both for the pre-facelift generation (2019–2023) and for the revised version (2024 ff.). The battery holder and the basic electrical requirements remained unchanged during the model update, so an AGM battery always ensures the full range of functions.
- Model years 2019–2023 (pre-facelift): Factory-fitted mostly with EFB 60 Ah, upgrade to 70 Ah AGM possible without restriction – ensures noticeably better start-stop performance and longer durability.
- Model years 2024–2026 (facelift): Continuation of the identical battery size; some delivered from the factory with AGM. If EFB is fitted as standard, an early switch to AGM is particularly worthwhile.
- Petrol engine variants (all with start-stop): 1.0 EcoBoost with 92, 125 or 155 PS (mild hybrid), 1.5 EcoBoost ST (200 PS), 1.0 EcoBoost without MHEV (up to 2020).
- Diesel engine variants: 1.5 EcoBlue with 120 PS (start-stop as standard).
- Hybrid / MHEV: Even with the 48-volt mild hybrid versions, a powerful 12-volt AGM battery is absolutely necessary, as the 48 V lithium battery only supports the starter/generator function and the entire vehicle electronics continue to be supplied from the 12 V source.
Before purchasing, please check your vehicle documents or the battery label to see whether an AGM battery is already fitted as standard. In all cases, a fresh AGM battery from Electronicx can replace the original equipment 1:1 and significantly improve electrical system stability.
Installation instructions step by step
Safety note: Switch off the ignition, remove the remote key and wait 10 minutes until all control units have entered sleep mode. Wear gloves and safety glasses. When working on the electrical system, always disconnect the negative terminal first.
- Open the bonnet and expose the battery compartment: Unlock the bonnet, prop it up securely and remove the plastic cover over the battery (front right in the engine bay, passenger side).
- Loosen the negative terminal (black): Using a 10 mm spanner, loosen the nut of the negative terminal clamp, lift the contact off the battery post and secure it to one side so that it cannot accidentally touch again.
- Loosen the positive terminal (red): Likewise loosen and remove the positive terminal clamp with a 10 mm spanner. Make sure that the positive terminal connection does not come into contact with the vehicle earth.
- Remove the battery holder: The Ford Puma has a lower retaining tab with a clamp. Loosen the fixing screw (usually 13 mm) at the front below the battery. Remove the retaining clamp and the tension bracket.
- Lift out the old battery: Grasp the battery by the carrying handles (if present) and carefully lift it out of the compartment. Weight approx. 17–22 kg – enlist a second person if necessary.
- Clean the battery tray and connections: Remove any corrosion residue with a wire brush, clean the terminal clamps with terminal grease or a cloth. Check that the new battery sits securely on the base.
- Insert the new AGM battery: Place the new battery in the tray so that the positive terminal side is on the right (vehicle interior) and the bottom rail B13 engages correctly in the lower mount.
- Fit the mounting: Refit the retaining clamp and tighten the screw hand-tight. The battery must not wobble, otherwise vibrations and damage to the plates may occur.
- Connect the terminal clamps: First attach the positive terminal (red), tighten and protect with the terminal cap. Then fit and bolt on the negative terminal (black). All contacts should be bright metal.
- Function check and BMS reset: Start the engine and watch for warning lights. For correct start-stop operation and an optimal charge balance, the battery management system (BMS) of the Puma should be reinitialised. Simple method: ignition on (without starting the engine), wait 10 seconds, switch off, pause for 1 minute. Alternatively, an OBD2 diagnostic device can be used. Then drive for at least 20 minutes so that the electronics can learn the new battery.
Duration: approx. 30–45 minutes. Important: Coding of the battery is generally not necessary on the Puma – the BMS automatically detects the changed capacity; however, a reset ensures that the charging characteristics settle reliably. If start-stop problems persist, a professional workshop can change the battery technology in the control unit.
Advantages of the AGM battery in the Ford Puma
- Up to 3 times longer cycle life than EFB batteries: AGM handles over 450 charge/discharge cycles at 50 % depth of discharge – ideal for frequent start-stop and high electrical loads in city traffic.
- Stable cold start even at −30 °C: With a cold cranking current of up to 680 A EN, the AGM ensures the engine starts immediately and reduces wear on the starter.
- Supports regenerative braking energy: The glass mat technology absorbs the charging currents generated during braking and coasting (MHEV) particularly efficiently and stores them with low losses.
- Vibration-resistant and leak-proof: Thanks to the electrolyte bound in the glass fibre mat, no battery acid can escape – safe for installation in any position in the engine bay.
- Maintenance-free and gas-tight: No need to top up with distilled water; it seals itself via an integrated valve system, even at high temperatures.
- Perfect for start-stop and mild hybrid: The consistently high open-circuit voltage ensures the function of the automatic start-stop system, infotainment systems, driver assistance and lighting without drops.
- No memory effect: AGM easily accepts changing charge states, as occur in the daily operation of the Puma.
- Fast payback: An early switch to AGM (from approx. €119) prevents consequential damage to the alternator and BMS and saves expensive repairs in the long term.
