AGM Battery for VW Sharan - Perfectly Fitting Energy for Your Family Van
The second-generation VW Sharan (type 7N, model years 2010–2022), as a spacious family van with up to seven seats, places high demands on the on-board electrical system. Air conditioning, seat heating, electric sliding doors, infotainment and not least the standard start-stop system require a battery that goes far beyond the capability of a conventional flooded battery. This is exactly where the AGM battery (Absorbent Glass Mat) comes in – it is the OE original equipment in the VW Sharan for all models with BlueMotion Technology and start-stop automatic.
The battery installation location in the VW Sharan 7N is at the front left in the engine compartment, below the windscreen behind the left headlight. The battery sits in an insulated battery box that dampens thermal fluctuations. Access is via the cover in the plenum chamber – a workshop-friendly location that nevertheless requires some installation effort, as the wiper arms and the water drain panel must be removed. Unlike the sister model VW Touran or the VW Passat, the battery in the Sharan is not in the boot or under the rear seat.
The typical OE equipment of the VW Sharan 7N includes an EFB or AGM battery depending on engine and equipment. Vehicles with powerful diesel engines (2.0 TDI with 140–177 PS), the 2.0 TSI or models with auxiliary heater and extensive comfort electronics are regularly fitted with an AGM battery from the factory. The capacity is in the range of 68 Ah to 95 Ah, the cold cranking current (CCA) is between 680 A and 850 A. AGM technology not only delivers higher starting currents than an EFB battery, but above all impresses with its extreme cycle resistance – essential for the frequent engine stops in city traffic and the recuperation charging during the overrun phases.
The on-board electrical system sensors of the VW Sharan permanently monitor the state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH) and the currents via the battery sensor on the negative terminal (BEM – battery energy management). The wrong battery type – for example a cheap standard flooded battery instead of an AGM – leads to starting problems, start-stop failures and in the worst case to destruction of the alternator within a few months, as the energy management can no longer control the charging curve correctly. The Sharan absolutely requires a vibration-resistant, leak-proof and deep-discharge-resistant AGM battery that matches exactly the parameters of the installed BEM control unit.
Technical Data - AGM Battery for VW Sharan
Several AGM battery types are suitable for the VW Sharan 7N – depending on engine, model year and equipment. The following table summarises the most important specifications and their practical significance for the daily operation of your Sharan. The values are based on the listed OE references (VAG part numbers 000 915 105 CC / 7P0 915 105 A / 5TA 915 105 A) and the specifications of leading manufacturers such as Varta and Banner.
| Specification | Value | Significance for the VW Sharan |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 12V | Standard on-board voltage. No deviation possible – 24V systems are not installed in the Sharan. |
| Capacity (Ah) | 68 Ah / 70 Ah / 75 Ah / 80 Ah / 92 Ah / 95 Ah | Depending on engine variant: 1.4 TSI / 2.0 TDI 140 PS require at least 68-70 Ah, 2.0 TDI 177 PS and 2.0 TSI with full equipment 80-95 Ah. Higher capacity = longer standing times with active comfort electronics. |
| Cold cranking current (CCA) | 680 A / 720 A / 760 A / 800 A / 850 A | The EN cold cranking current according to DIN standard. For the 2.0 TDI with high compression, at least 720-760 A are required. Critical for reliable starting at sub-zero temperatures and a fully loaded family van. |
| Dimensions (LxWxH in mm) | Several designs: 242 x 175 x 190 (68-70 Ah) 278 x 175 x 190 (75-80 Ah) 315 x 175 x 190 (92-95 Ah) 353 x 175 x 190 (105 Ah, rare) |
The design must fit exactly to the battery carrier in the plenum chamber. Standard in the Sharan 7N: 278 mm or 315 mm length. The height of 190 mm is the maximum – taller batteries prevent the cover from closing. |
| Terminal arrangement | 0 (positive terminal on the right when looking at the terminal side, positive terminal at the front right when installed) | The VW Sharan 7N uses terminal layout 0 as standard. Reversing the terminals means the standard battery cables will not fit, or only under tension – there is a risk of fire and cable damage. |
| Base rail | B13 (standard foot rail, typical of VW) | The B13 base rail holds the battery in the carrier with a form fit and prevents vibration. Do not use universal batteries without a B13 foot rail – inadequate fixing leads to housing damage and a safety risk. |
| Service life | 6-8 years under normal conditions; 5-7 years with intensive start-stop use | In practice, AGM batteries last 5-7 years in the VW Sharan. Service life depends on the driving profile, charge cycles and the condition of the alternator. Tip: an annual battery test prevents breakdowns in winter. |
The relevant figures in detail: the Ah capacity determines how long auxiliary consumers can be operated with the engine off – a critical factor in the Sharan with its many electrical consumers (electric tailgate, sliding doors, auxiliary heater). Too low a capacity leads to frequent alternator intervention and increased fuel consumption. The cold cranking current (CCA) should not be underestimated, especially in diesel engines – the 2.0 TDI CR with 177 PS requires over 700 A for several seconds for a cold start at -18 degrees C. AGM batteries from Electronicx achieve these peak values thanks to their special glass-fleece technology with extremely low internal resistances – values from 2.8 milliohms are possible. The B13 base rail is a frequently overlooked detail that decides fit accuracy and vibration safety. It is of course integrated in Electronicx AGM batteries for the VW Sharan.
Compatible model years and engine variants
The AGM battery is the recommended and often mandatory battery technology for almost all VW Sharan of the second generation (type 7N, 05/2010 to 08/2022). What matters is the presence of a start-stop system, which is standard on all Sharan 7N with BlueMotion Technology. Only a few early models without start-stop (model years 2010-2011, basic equipment) can fall back on a conventional flooded battery – but here too the AGM variant offers clear advantages thanks to its longer service life and vibration resistance.
The first generation of the VW Sharan (type 7M, 1995-2010) has a simpler electrical system without start-stop and without BEM sensor technology in the later model years (approx. 2005-2010). Here an AGM battery can also be used – it is then an upgrade solution for vehicles with additional comfort electronics or frequent short journeys, but not mandatory. On a Sharan 7M, however, the capacity and size selection differs (usually 70-80 Ah, 278x175x190 mm, also terminal layout 0).
- Model years 05/2010–08/2015 (VW Sharan 7N, pre-facelift): All models with a start-stop system absolutely require an AGM or EFB battery. AGM is the higher-quality option with 2-3 times the cycle life of EFB. OE reference includes VAG 7P0 915 105 A (68-75 Ah), 000 915 105 CC (80-95 Ah). Typical: 2.0 TDI 140 PS with 68 Ah AGM, 2.0 TDI 170-177 PS with 80-95 Ah AGM.
- Model years 09/2015–08/2022 (VW Sharan 7N, facelift): Additional assistance systems, a more advanced infotainment generation (MIB2) and more efficient alternators make the electrical system even more demanding. OE batteries with 70-95 Ah AGM. The 1.4 TSI ACT (cylinder deactivation) places particular demands on voltage stability – here the AGM with its low self-discharge (<3% per month) is ideal.
- Engine variants (all suitable for AGM):
- 2.0 TDI CR with 140 PS / 150 PS / 170 PS / 177 PS / 184 PS / 190 PS / 200 PS / 240 PS (biturbo) – high compression, requires min. 720 A CCA, typically 75-95 Ah.
- 2.0 TSI with 200 PS / 220 PS – high-revving petrol engine with direct injection, typically 70-80 Ah AGM.
- 1.4 TSI with 150 PS (some with ACT cylinder deactivation) – economical petrol engine, typically 68-70 Ah AGM.
- 1.8 TSI with 160 PS / 180 PS (up to 2015) – typically 70 Ah AGM.
- No hybrid variants available – pure combustion engine with a 12V electrical system.
A change of generation in the OE battery configuration took place around 2012/2013: early Sharan 7N (2010-2012) were sometimes still supplied with 68 Ah EFB, while later models consistently used AGM with at least 70 Ah. From the 2015 facelift, AGM was fitted almost across the board. Electronicx recommends an AGM battery with 75-80 Ah and at least 760 A CCA as a universal and future-proof replacement for all Sharan 7N with start-stop – this reliably covers all diesel and petrol engines and offers reserves for the cold winter months.
Installation instructions step by step
Safety note: Before starting work, switch off the ignition, remove the vehicle key from the ignition area and wait at least 15 minutes so that all control units can shut down. Never work on the battery with the ignition switched on – insulation tests and BEM adaptations could be falsified, and there is also a risk of short circuit. Recommended tools: 10 mm and 13 mm ring spanners or a ratchet with extension, Torx T30, terminal puller, small flat-blade screwdriver, torque wrench (5-6 Nm for terminal clamps).
- Access to the battery compartment: Open the bonnet and remove the rubber seal along the front scuttle panel cover. Loosen the screws of the scuttle panel (3 x Torx T30 along the front edge). Carefully lift off the cover upwards and place it on a clean surface.
- Removing the windscreen wipers (if necessary): On some model years the wiper arms block removal. Mark the position of the wiper arms on the windscreen with adhesive tape. Remove the nuts (13 mm) and carefully pull off the arms – a puller prevents the wiper linkage from breaking.
- Opening the battery box: The battery box is now visible on the left in the scuttle panel. Loosen the clips or screws of the battery cover and lift it off. You can now see the battery in its carrier with the terminal clamps.
- Disconnecting the negative terminal (observe the order!): First loosen the nut of the negative terminal clamp (10 mm spanner). Carefully remove the cable and secure it so that it cannot spring back and make contact with the terminal. Insulate the cable end with a cloth.
- Disconnecting the positive terminal: Remove the red protective cover of the positive terminal and loosen the clamp (10 mm). Lift off the cable. Watch out for additional smaller cables (fuse holder, alternator lead) that may be attached to the positive terminal.
- Pulling off the vent hose: On the side of the battery there is a thin plastic hose (vent). Carefully pull it off the battery housing – do not tear it off, the hose leads downwards to the outside.
- Loosening the battery holder: At the base of the battery there is a retaining clamp with a 13 mm screw (base fastening). Loosen this screw completely and remove the retaining plate. The battery can now be lifted out.
- Removing the battery: Lift the battery out of the well with a straight back – AGM batteries weigh 18-23 kg. Use the carrying handles on the battery if present. Do not apply force to the terminals.
- Fitting the new Electronicx AGM battery: Place the new AGM battery exactly in the carrier – terminal arrangement 0 means: positive terminal at the front right. The base strip B13 must sit in the carrier guide with a form fit. Fasten the retaining clamp with the 13 mm screw (torque: 20 Nm).
- Connecting in reverse order: First fit the positive terminal and tighten to 5-6 Nm – refit the red cover. Then tighten the negative terminal (5-6 Nm). Push the vent hose onto the connection. Fit the battery cover and scuttle panel cover.
Duration: Approx. 30-45 minutes with the right tools and experience; 60 minutes for practised DIYers. ATTENTION – battery coding: After replacement, the new AGM battery MUST be registered in the battery energy management (BEM) of the VW Sharan. This requires a diagnostic device (VCDS, ODIS, OBD-Eleven or similar). Without coding, the system charges the new battery with incorrect parameters – the alternator overcharges or undercharges the battery, service life can drop by up to 50% and start-stop operation may remain deactivated or faulty. Coding includes: battery type (AGM), capacity (e.g. 80 Ah), manufacturer (e.g. Electronicx / Banner licence production) and a freely selectable new serial number, which signals to the BEM: "New battery detected – reset charging curves."
Advantages of the AGM battery in the VW Sharan
- Start-stop cycle resistance: The AGM battery withstands up to 360,000 engine stops over its service life – an EFB battery manages a maximum of 120,000 cycles. In city traffic with frequent stops at lights, this corresponds to a usable reserve. Your Sharan remains ready to start even if start-stop intervenes 50 times a day.
- 3-4 times better deep discharge resistance: If the Sharan is not moved for several days and the auxiliary heater is activated, the battery discharges. An AGM withstands deep discharges down to 80% depth of discharge (DoD) without irreversible capacity loss – a standard flooded battery is already damaged from 50% DoD. This protects the battery during long idle periods, for example on a winter holiday.
- Vibration-resistant to VW standard TL 825 06: The glass fleece technology fixes the electrolyte throughout the entire interior of the battery – no liquid, oscillating acid film. Especially on the long wheelbase of the VW Sharan (2.92 m), body vibrations act on the battery to an increased extent. The AGM remains sealed and intact, even after 200,000 km on German motorways and country roads.
- Maintenance-free and leak-proof: No topping up with distilled water required – the closed system recombines charging gases 99% internally. No acid leakage, no corrosion on terminal clamps or battery tray. Even in an accident, the battery is leak-proof thanks to the glass fibre mats – a safety advantage over liquid batteries in the engine compartment.
- Up to 850 A cold cranking current (CCA): The 2.0 TDI with 177 PS and direct injection requires enormous starting currents at -18 degrees C. With 850 A CCA, the Electronicx AGM delivers around 15% more starting reserve than the factory-fitted EFB solution – even with a half-discharged battery, the diesel compression-ignition engine in the Sharan starts reliably.
- Optimised alternator charging: Thanks to its low internal resistance of under 3.5 milliohms, the AGM battery absorbs charging energy extremely quickly – ideal for recuperation during braking. In the VW Sharan this saves up to 0.15 litres of fuel per 100 km and reduces CO2 emissions by around 4 g/km (based on ADAC measurements).
- Longer service life = lower overall costs: With a long service life, the AGM battery in the Sharan effectively costs less than an EFB battery. Converted, Sharan drivers save at least 100-150 EUR in battery costs over the vehicle's service life – not to mention breakdowns and consequential damage to the alternator and BEM control unit.
- Full compatibility with the Sharan's comfort electronics: Electric sliding doors, tailgate, auxiliary heater and seat heating generate short-term high-current loads of over 40 amperes. The AGM battery delivers these currents from a standstill with more voltage stability than any EFB or flooded battery – your electrical helpers work smoothly and without voltage drops that could lead to error messages.
Frequently asked questions - AGM battery VW Sharan
- Question 1: Which AGM battery fits the VW Sharan 7N (2010-2022)?
- For most VW Sharan 7N with start-stop, an AGM battery with 75-80 Ah, at least 760 A CCA, terminal layout 0 and base strip B13 is the optimal choice. The dimensions should be 278 x 175 x 190 mm (75-80 Ah) or 315 x 175 x 190 mm (92-95 Ah). Electronicx recommends the EX80AGM (80 Ah, 800 A CCA, 278 mm) as a universal fitting solution for all diesel and petrol engine versions of the Sharan 7N. If in doubt, the old battery can be read out or the battery compartment measured.
- Question 2: How long does the AGM battery last in the VW Sharan?
- With correct coding in the BEM control unit and regular use, an AGM battery in the VW Sharan can achieve a long service life. The actual service life depends on the driving profile, outside temperatures and care. What is decisive is proper coding after installation – without BEM adaptation, incorrect charging drastically shortens the service life.
- Question 3: Do I need to code the battery after replacement?
- Yes, absolutely. The VW Sharan has a factory-fitted battery energy management (BEM) with a sensor on the negative terminal. After replacing the battery, the BEM must be told the new capacity, the battery type (AGM) and a new serial number via a diagnostic device (VCDS / ODIS / OBD-Eleven). Without this coding, the system continues charging with the old, incorrect parameters and the new AGM battery ages unnecessarily quickly. With a diagnostic tool, coding takes only 2-3 minutes – many workshops offer this service for 20-40 EUR.
- Question 4: What does an AGM battery for the VW Sharan cost?
- High-quality AGM batteries for the VW Sharan are available from Electronicx from 109 EUR (70 Ah) to 179 EUR (95 Ah). OE original batteries from VW cost by comparison 280-420 EUR – with identical technology and comparable performance data. Shipping is insured within Germany by DHL with return of the old battery in accordance with BattDG. Electronicx customers save on average 150-200 EUR compared with the VW authorised workshop, including coding by an independent workshop.
- Question 5: Where do I find the battery in the VW Sharan?
- On the VW Sharan 7N (2010-2022), the battery is located at the front left of the engine compartment, hidden under the water deflector cover directly beneath the windscreen. You have to remove the black plastic cover of the water deflector (3 Torx screws, possibly the wiper arms) to reach the battery box. Unlike many other VW models, the battery is not in the boot, under the driver's seat or in the glovebox. On the older Sharan 7M (1995-2010), you will also find the battery at the front left of the engine compartment, but without start-stop components and usually in a simpler holder.
